Gasoline-only vehicles were 49% of global new-car sales in the first half of 2026, the first time on record below half, down from 73% in 2021. But hybrids outsold battery-electric cars 7.27 million to 6.87 million, and about 83% of the world's new vehicles still have an engine. Europe's BEV sales grew 32% while Tesla's own quarter fell 2.1%.

Honda R&D, with Taisei Corporation and Taisei Rotec, announced an in-motion wireless charging road on 5 October 2026 delivering up to 150 kW. It claims the world's first ground unit integrating inverter and coil, linked by DC distribution and designed to retrofit into milled existing pavement rated for 20-tonne trucks. Public-road demonstrations start in Japan's 2027 fiscal year.

Tesla registered 291 cars in India in September 2026, a record and a 322% rise on a year earlier, moving it past Mercedes-Benz into second place in the country's luxury EV segment behind BMW on 502. In July it was third on 16%. Cumulative registrations crossed 1,000 in early October, helped by a sixth showroom and a line-up narrowed to two cars.

BMW will enable Highway Assistant in Sweden with software release 11/26 in November 2026, allowing hands-off driving to 130 km/h with lane changes confirmed by looking at the door mirror. It works because BMW holds UN R171 DCAS approval, which is recognised across 18 European markets. Tesla's FSD Supervised rides on a Dutch national exemption recognised in eight countries, and Sweden is not one of them.

Tesla's European configurator is quoting Model Y delivery in the first quarter of 2027, with entry trims at January–February and no immediate-delivery inventory. France's delais.fr tracker put the average wait near 98 days on 5 October 2026. The 7,500-a-week Grünheide rate behind the shortage is a mid-October target the plant was about 1,000 cars a week short of in early September.

The KBA counted 88,599 new battery-electric cars in Germany in September 2026, a 34.5% share of a 256,774-car market and 94.7% up on the 45,495 of September 2025. Petrol fell 29.2% and plug-in hybrids were exactly flat. The brand-level breakdown that would show Tesla's figure is not published yet.

The Norwegian EV Association's Elbilisten 2026 survey, fielded 31 March to 3 May among close to 15,000 electric-car owners, found 24% would avoid Tesla for political reasons against 43% a year earlier. Scepticism toward Chinese brands moved the other way, from 23% to 31% — while Chinese-owned brands took 20,566 of Norway's 81,041 new EV registrations in January-July.

From 29 November 2026 Euro 7 sets the EU's first legal limits on brake particulate emissions: 3 mg/km for battery-electric cars against 7 mg/km for combustion and hybrid ones. Regenerative braking already delivers it. Tyre abrasion, where heavy electric cars genuinely lose, is measured but not capped.

Renault CEO François Provost told France Inter on 3 October 2026 that the group will reinvest more than EUR 10 billion in France over five years in electric and more affordable cars. The previous five years got EUR 13 billion, and the new pledge carries a political condition the old one did not.

Vattenfall InCharge says the energy drawn from its German public network is up about 65% since January, and that its fast chargers passed 10 GWh by the end of August, roughly 47% more than the whole of 2025. The company used the figures to argue against a German fuel rebate. What it did not publish is how many charge points it now runs, which is what separates busier chargers from more chargers.

Tesla updated its North American configurator on 1 October 2026: every Model 3 in the US, Puerto Rico and Mexico now has a 16-inch centre screen, the Premium AWD drops from 4.2 to 3.8 seconds to 60 mph, and the Performance gains 18 hp and 7 miles of range. Prices did not move. Canada and Europe were not included, and vehicle-to-load still did not cross the Pacific.

Switzerland and Liechtenstein registered 7,833 battery-electric cars in September 2026, up 51.2% year on year, for a record 35.7% share of a 21,948-car market. The Tesla Model Y led all models on 1,679 units, more than five times the runner-up.

From 15 October 2026 GreenWay charges according to the country you are charging in, not the country your account is registered in. Slovak-registered accounts lose a roughly 14% advantage at Polish ultra-fast chargers, where they had been paying 2.58 PLN/kWh against a local 2.99 PLN/kWh.

BMW opened its Gen6 high-voltage battery plant at Irlbach-Strasskirchen in Lower Bavaria on 1 October 2026 and began series production immediately on two shifts. The EUR 1bn site assembles cylindrical cells bought from outside suppliers into structural packs for the new i3 — it does not make cells.

BYD sold 463,561 new energy vehicles in September 2026, its strongest month of the year, with battery-electric volume at a record 273,143. Exports reached 180,700 cars, up 153.6% year on year and 39% of everything it sold. Year to date the company is still down 3.9%.

Italy registered 10,782 battery-electric cars in September 2026 for a 7.6% share, with the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y taking the top two places. Tesla went from 265 cars in August to 2,132 in September, and Italy passed 100,000 EVs in nine months for the first time.

Battery-electric cars took 52.8% of Dutch new-car registrations in September 2026, the first time the monthly share has cleared half. Tesla was the second-biggest brand on 3,165 cars, up 56%, in a month inflated by a company-car tax deadline.

BMW used its 30 September Capital Markets Day to confirm an entry-segment all-electric Neue Klasse model for 2028 with a focus on Europe. The widely used "i1" name and its specification are not official. BMW also says the iX3 has passed 100,000 orders and reached margin parity with combustion models.

The family of Steven Alvarez, killed when his Model 3 left a Clute, Texas street at 104 mph in May 2026, has sued Tesla in Travis County alleging the car accelerated on its own. Police called it a probable medical episode. Tesla's own filing to NHTSA says driver assistance was Verified Engaged. The data that would settle it is redacted.

Tesla has launched Emergency Drive Away in firmware 2026.38.3, letting drivers pull out of a Supercharger bay with the cable still attached. It works by accepting damage to the car and the charger rather than by speeding up a safe disconnect, it uploads camera footage to Tesla, and it is US-only for now.

From 1 October 2026, Energie 360° Mobilität, Gofast, Swisscharge and Move Mobility merge into Joya Mobility AG — 7,500 public charging points including more than 1,800 fast chargers, making it Switzerland's biggest CPO from day one. Plug & Charge is promised by 2027 and cross-border roaming has no date.

Tesla registered 5,154 Model Ys in Taiwan in September 2026 out of 37,054 new vehicles, putting it first overall — 1,539 units ahead of the Toyota Corolla Cross. It is a quarter-end delivery peak, and the second time this year the Model Y has topped the Taiwanese chart.

Transport & Environment's 1 October analysis concludes the EU will have enough locally made battery cells by 2030 to cover every EV touched by the Industrial Accelerator Act's local-content rules, directly contradicting an ACEA-commissioned study published six days earlier. More than 85% of active European capacity belongs to non-European companies.

On 1 October 2026 Tesla added an entry-level Model 3 RWD in Australia and New Zealand at A$45,990/NZ$54,900 — A$9,000 below the Premium, with the rear screen, ambient lighting and premium seat materials removed. The Model Y Performance fell A$4,500 to A$84,900 (NZ$95,900) because Tesla moved its production for those markets from Giga Berlin to Giga Shanghai. Premium and Performance Model 3 trims gain the 16-inch screen, dark headliner and V2L.

Norway's September 2026 registrations hit 18,733 (+31%), with 18,511 battery-electric cars for a 98.8% share. The Tesla Model Y led all cars on 4,810 units and Tesla registered 4,935 in total, up 2.2% — but its market share fell from 33.7% to 26.3% because the market grew far faster. Separately, battery-electric cars are now 35.3% of Norway's entire passenger car fleet, ahead of diesel at 29.4%.

Tesla has filed a Model Y L update in China swapping the 142 kW front motor for the 176 kW TL2 unit used on the Model Y Performance. CLTC range rises from 751 km to 776 km and consumption falls from 12.8 to 12.4 kWh/100 km, with kerb weight unchanged at 2,088 kg and no price change — the gain comes from drive-unit efficiency, not a bigger battery. The Model Y L is not yet sold in Europe.

Sweden registered 28,667 new passenger cars in September 2026, up 14%, with battery-electric cars taking 49% of the market against 38% a year earlier — 14,034 cars, up about 45%. The Tesla Model Y was the most-registered electric car on 2,330 units, 16.6% of all new BEVs, but third overall behind the Volvo XC60 and EX40/XC40, and second year to date behind the Volvo EX40. The widely repeated 492% rise is a month-on-month comparison against a weak August; year on year the increase is about 68%. Private customers now take 40% of electric registrations, up from 33%.

Spain registered 15,468 battery-electric cars in September 2026, up 62.7% year on year. Tesla took 3,732 of them (24.1%), with the Model 3 on 2,528 and the Model Y on 1,204, and the Model 3 finished just 30 units behind the Toyota C-HR for best-selling car of any kind. The quarterly picture is the opposite: Tesla's Q3 registrations fell 18.8% against Q3 2025, nine-month growth is only 9.5% against a market growing far faster, and BYD has moved ahead of Tesla year to date, 13,596 to 13,473. No European model made the monthly electric top ten.
