Canada's Model Y Rebate Claims Tripled in September. Only the Chevrolet Bolt Had More.

Just before midnight on 13 October 2026, a Tesla drove at freeway speed through a four-lane closure on eastbound I-80 in Fairfield, California, and hit a CHP Dodge Charger with two officers inside, seriously injuring both. The 22-year-old driver told investigators he was asleep with Full Self-Driving engaged. CHP has not released the model or software version, so his account is so far the only evidence the system was on.

On 16 October 2026 Slovakia's Ministry of Transport officially recognised the Dutch RDW's provisional approval of Tesla FSD (Supervised), making Slovakia the ninth European country to allow it. Tesla Europe says the rollout "begins soon" but has given no date, price or hardware requirement; in Czechia the launch covered Hardware 4 cars only. The driver remains fully responsible, the minister stressed.

Germany and France agreed a joint position on EU car rules on 16 October 2026: a 90% cut in fleet CO2 by 2035 with no obligation to offset the remaining 10%, and Made in Europe conditions requiring 70% of components (batteries excluded) and 10% of battery content from Europe for incentives and public contracts. Other member states and the European Parliament still have to agree. For Tesla, the Grünheide-built Model Y may qualify; the Shanghai-built Model 3 would not.

A fault in the Ekoenergetyka chargers at Ionity's 500 kW pilot site in Elverum, Norway, caused six EVs to fire their pyro-fuses, cutting off their high-voltage batteries and leaving them unable to drive. Ionity admitted the fault and is replacing the chargers, and on 16 October 2026 said its insurer, Zurich, had confirmed the cause and will cover the repairs. The affected models have not been named.

Waymo will start mapping and testing in Toronto within days and aims to carry its first public riders there in 2028, with Element Fleet Management running the fleet. Ontario has no framework for a commercial driverless service yet. Tesla sells FSD (Supervised) in Canada but runs no robotaxi service there and has announced none.

Aampere, a Munich used-EV auction platform, published its first EV Resale Index in October 2026. Measured by the highest dealer bid in Q3 2026 auctions, a three-year-old Tesla Model 3 keeps 57.6% of its new price and a Model Y 55.9%, the two best results of 14 models; the market averages 48.0%, Chinese brands 41%. Values of used EVs across the platform rose 9.3% from January to September 2026, which Aampere ties to record fuel prices.

The French government's 17-measure electrification plan of 15 October 2026 includes a charging transparency rule: fast chargers of 50 kW and more must display the price in €/kWh and the power actually being delivered, and every charger must issue an itemised payment receipt showing the per-kWh price and any occupancy fees. The arrêté goes to consultation by 1 November 2026; receipts and new stations from April 2027, existing stations by November 2027. The plan also adds a €500 aid for a controllable home charger and purchase support for European-built electric vans and quadricycles from 1 January 2027.

Volkswagen confirmed to the press that recall actions are coming for several ID. model lines in Europe after internal checks found supplier-made battery cells that do not meet its standards and can, in rare cases, overheat. Handelsblatt puts the number of cars in the five digits. The interim fix is a software cap at 80% charge; the permanent repair has not been defined. The UK recall is already under way, and the US has a separate 22,524-car ID.4 recall with the same 80% advice.

Tesla showed the second-generation Roadster at SpaceX's McGregor site on 15 October 2026: 0 to 60 mph in 0.81 s, an upside-down loop on suction fans, and a flip on cold-gas thrusters. It then published three versions. Only the Performance is road ready, reservations stay North America only, no price is set, and Musk says production starts in 2028.

CNCDA's third-quarter California Auto Outlook puts Tesla at 121,822 registrations through September 2026, down 10%, while the state's zero-emission market fell 26.1% to 215,467. Tesla's share of it rose from 46.4% to 56.5%. The Model Y, at 86,099, is still California's best-selling vehicle; hybrids now outsell zero-emission cars statewide.

On 22 August 2026 a 2021 Model Y crossed the Route 55 median in Vineland, New Jersey, hit a tree and struck an SUV head-on, killing 68-year-old Phillip Eastman. Tesla's Standing General Order report marks driver assistance as Verified Engaged at a logged 37 mph and redacts the narrative, software version and operating-area fields.

NHTSA's Standing General Order file now holds 36 Tesla Robotaxi incident reports. Two new August 2026 reports, in Dallas and Austin, are coded as remote operation, bringing the remote-operator crashes to five, every one of which ended in a collision at walking pace. Waymo says its remote staff never drive.
