Mike Snyder, who has run Tesla's Megapack, Powerwall and Supercharger businesses as one organisation since October 2024, has stepped down, the Wall Street Journal reported on 15 October 2026. AJ Booth, senior director of energy products engineering, is to succeed him. Tesla has not confirmed the change. Its third-quarter results follow on 21 October.

On 12 October 2026 Polish developer Maciej P. Wilczyński showed Tesla's Automations app, the if-this-then-that tool China has had since February, running on a European Tesla after a feature flag was switched on. The build is fully translated, matches the Chinese feature set and blocks any action that controls FSD. Tesla has not announced it for Europe or given a date.

Handelsblatt and the FAZ report that Friedrich Merz and Emmanuel Macron have agreed a joint position on the EU auto package: a further ten percentage points off the 2035 car CO2 target, taking it to roughly 80% rather than the Commission's proposed 90%, in exchange for German support for stricter “Made in Europe” rules.

Article 28 of France's 2027 draft budget, presented on 1 October 2026, would add a resilience criterion to the eco-score that gates the country's EV purchase aid, treating cars whose battery supply chain is dominated by a non-EU country less favourably.

Elon Musk confirmed on 3 October 2026 that Tesla and SpaceX's Terafab chip project is in discussions with TSMC, saying only 'Just discussions, but something may come of it'. The report behind it, by Tim Culpan, says the likeliest outcome is TSMC owning and operating the fab - which would reverse the vertically integrated design Terafab was announced with. Nothing is agreed and TSMC has not commented; its earnings call is on 15 October.

South Korean outlet The Elec reports LG Energy Solution will build a new 46100 cylindrical cell — 46 mm by 100 mm, 20 mm taller than Tesla's 4680 — at its Wrocław plant in Poland, with lines set up in 2027 and Mercedes deliveries from 2028. The format was not in LGES's disclosed line-up, and neither company has confirmed the customer.

Elon Musk has cut the memory on Tesla's AI5 and AI6 chips to secure supply and lower cost for Optimus mass production. AI5 was to drop from 144GB to 72GB before being nudged back up to 96GB; AI6 goes from 216GB to 144GB. Musk says bandwidth, not capacity, is the limit.

Handelsblatt reports that Volkswagen has selected Wayve over Nvidia and around a dozen other suppliers to provide the AI driving model for its future cars, following a comparison held in a southern German city in August. Wayve would supply only the software, integrated by Cariad into Volkswagen's own chips and sensors, while Nvidia would have supplied a complete system — and VW is said to be negotiating a separate Nvidia chip deal anyway. Nothing is officially confirmed.

Rivian's VP of investor relations Chip Newcom and SVP of autonomy James Philbin told Evercore ISI's ADAS, AV and AI Forum in New York on 30 September 2026 that lidar now costs the company a few hundred dollars per vehicle, against thousands or tens of thousands historically. Point-to-point autonomy starts rolling out to early adopters on Gen 2 R1 hardware by the end of 2026, with operational limits including parking lots, and reaches the wider fleet later in 2027. R2s carrying lidar and Rivian's 1,600 TOPS RAP1 computer go to employees this year and paying customers in 2027. Tesla's long-standing argument against lidar was that it was too expensive to justify.

At the World Manufacturing Convention in Hefei, Volkswagen-backed Gotion High-Tech announced commercialisation targets for its Jinshi solid-state cells: energy density above 400 Wh/kg, up from a previous 350 Wh/kg target, and a cost of 150 dollars per kWh — the Chinese industry's 'one-yuan-per-watt-hour' threshold. A 2 GWh line is under construction, with small-batch vehicle integration targeted for end-2026 and mass production in 2030.

Germany's Federal Ministry for Transport says it is "technology-open and safety-oriented" on Tesla FSD (Supervised), with the KBA reviewing the file alongside the Dutch RDW and Tesla — the first time the biggest outstanding vote has called itself open. On the same day the European Transport Safety Council escalated from June's call for a pause to urging outright rejection, arguing the 50% speed offset should never have been treated as needing no Article 39 exemption. The Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles votes in December.

Tesla was granted US patent 12,746,987 B1, "Electric Fan Car", on 29 September 2026. Four electric ducted fans in the rear diffuser draw air from an underbody inlet through internal ducts and expel it at the rear, creating downforce that does not depend on vehicle speed. The drawings show a Model S. It is a separate document from the active rear-wing application published on 24 September, and it arrives about two weeks before the Roadster reveal on 15 October.

In an interview published on 28 September 2026, Tesla Semi programme lead Dan Priestley placed European test and demonstration trucks in the first half of 2027 and targeted customer deliveries for the second half, later than the start-of-2027 timing widely reported since IAA Transportation. The first European trucks are built in Nevada, with European localisation described only as probably relevant at some point. Tesla will sell direct to fleets of any size and is building its own Semi service and maintenance network in Europe. Autonomous driving is an intention for Europe with no date attached.

On 28 September 2026 Politico reported that UK business secretary Jonathan Reynolds, speaking at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, described tariffs on Chinese electric cars as under review and the decision as finely balanced — a shift from his 18 September position ruling them out. The move follows an EU demand that Britain align its China trade policy or join the customs union to access the bloc's 'made in Europe' programme. Britain applies a flat 10% duty where the EU adds anti-subsidy duties of 7.8% to 35.3%; Tesla's Shanghai-built Model 3 pays 17.8% in the EU and 10% in the UK.

On 25 September 2026 Nigel Raynard, who runs a limousine service in Byron Bay, New South Wales, posted that his Model S 75D had reached 600,000 miles — about 965,000 km — in roughly eight years. He says it has needed one battery, replaced under warranty at 666,666 km and upgraded to a 90 kWh pack, and one set of brake pads. It is a self-reported figure, but it supplies the per-car battery history that the million-kilometre Kelowna taxi did not have.

Stella Li, BYD's executive vice-president, said in an interview published on 28 September 2026 that BYD will have its first solid-state model next year. She named no model, market or specification. BYD's formal timeline, unchanged since February 2025, puts demonstration fitment in 2027 and mass production around 2030 — and its chief scientist has flagged dry-room manufacturing as the unsolved step.

A Robotaxi app notification told Austin riders the Cybercab fleet had doubled. Availability went from 58 to 125 vehicles between 21 and 25 September 2026, while volunteer-tracked Texas registrations rose from 69 to 126 Cybercabs out of 546 robotaxis in total. The near-match between 125 available and 126 registered means almost every Cybercab is working — unlike the 420 registered Model Y robotaxis.

Analyst estimates for Tesla's third-quarter 2026 deliveries range from Cantor Fitzgerald's 421,758 to JPMorgan's 482,000, a spread of roughly 60,000 cars. Tesla reports on Friday 2 October. The Street undershot Q2 by 74,000 units, and even the most bullish Q3 call sits about 3% below the 497,099 Tesla delivered in Q3 2025.

Correspondence reported by elektrowoz.pl shows Tesla asked Poland on 14 April 2026 to recognise the Dutch RDW's temporary Article 39 approval for FSD (Supervised). Poland's TDT, which would have to decide, says no manufacturer documents were ever submitted. The Motor Transport Institute wants the system tested in Polish conditions, and Tesla offered to run demonstration drives in Berlin rather than Poland.

Carwow published a German buyer survey on 28 September 2026: 57.8% say fuel prices make them consider an EV more strongly, 66.4% name a battery-electric car as their next purchase, and only 7.8% would pick petrol or diesel. Configurations on carwow's own site ran 79% electric over a two-week period. The sharper finding is about patience: 60% call short delivery times important, and if faced with a seven-month wait, 40% would move to a quicker-to-deliver EV rather than hold on. That last number is the one that favours Tesla in Germany.

A Stellantis patent application published in late September 2026 describes severing a burning high-voltage battery from the car with explosive bolts, letting it fall through the floor, and then driving the vehicle clear on its 12-volt system. Triggering can be automatic, by lever, or by a touchscreen button. It is a patent, not a product, and the drawings show a combustion-engined Dodge Challenger. The interesting part is the philosophy: where Tesla publishes engineering meant to stop one bad cell taking the pack with it, this design accepts the pack is lost and tries to save the car.

Hyundai Motor Group's head of R&D, Manfred Harrer, told reporters the industry cannot give up on solid-state batteries and expects small-volume cars with the cells within five years - while warning that raw material costs stay extraordinarily high for many years, keeping them out of the mass market. It is the least flattering of three recent solid-state claims, after Mercedes secured ProLogium Gen4 rights and Geely claimed 500 Wh/kg pilot cells. Tesla has no announced solid-state programme.

ACEA commissioned an analysis of whether Europe can supply the EU-origin battery cells its own draft 'Made in EU' rules would demand. It cannot: around three million cars would fail to qualify if the Industrial Accelerator Act takes effect in 2028, and European cell output only reaches 306 GWh by 2032. Tesla starts building cells at Grünheide in 2027.

Tesla named Ireland as an anticipated FSD market on 26 September 2026. Ireland's Department of Transport has said FSD can only be allowed domestically once it is approved at EU level — unlike the seven countries that recognised the Dutch authorisation nationally. With the EU vote slipped to December at the earliest, "in due course" means 2027.

A decompile of Robotaxi app build 26.8.2 on 24 September 2026 turned up unreleased code for X Money payments, a Stop Now command that halts an approaching car without cancelling the ride, and a cellular fallback for opening a Cybercab when the phone cannot reach it. Tesla has confirmed none of it.

CATL says lithium iron phosphate cells recovered from China's decommissioned Zhangbei grid battery came back from fourteen years of service with most of their capacity intact and roughly a decade of second life left. It matters to Tesla owners because CATL supplies the LFP cells in Standard Range Model 3s and Model Ys — but the testing was done in CATL's own laboratory, and the published retention figures disagree with one another.

Footage from Tesla's Alexandria showroom in Sydney shows a Cybercab running a full Tesla operating system with driver profiles, seat memory and Tesla Theater — features a robotaxi passenger would never use. Tesla has not commented on what the build represents.

A report in The Information, summarised by Electrek on 25 September 2026, says Tesla has ramped Optimus output at Fremont from a few dozen units a week in Q2 to several hundred in August, with an end-of-year target above 1,000 a week. The robots still cannot handle generalised tasks, take several days to learn a basic one, and are mostly used internally for testing and data collection. Hands with 100-plus parts are still assembled by workers, and suppliers cannot hold quality at volume.

The USPTO published Tesla application US 2026/0285418 A1 on 24 September 2026, describing a two-piece active rear wing that sits flush with the deck lid and deploys in under three seconds to make up to 700 kg of downforce above 100 mph. The drawings show a low fastback 2+2 coupe, but the patent never names the Roadster. Tesla unveils the new Roadster on 1 October in Texas.

The Financial Times reported on 25 September 2026 that the EU has told the UK to raise tariffs on China-built cars and align with EU trade policy, or join its customs union, to avoid 'made in Europe' barriers. The EU charges anti-subsidy duties of up to 35.3% on top of a 10% import tariff; Tesla's Shanghai-built Model 3 pays 7.8%. The UK charges a flat 10% and nothing more, which Brussels fears makes Britain a backdoor into the single market.

The Brussels road-safety non-profit Johanna.be published its FSD30 study on 24 September 2026: over roughly 400 km driven in July, Tesla's FSD (Supervised) exceeded the limit in 55% of the 30 km/h segments tested, averaging 44 km/h, and in 42% of 20 km/h woonerven. 3D design assets pulled from Tesla's public Android APK appear to show a next-generation Optimus, with enclosed joints, a unified torso and forearms suggesting tendon-driven fingers. Tesla has confirmed nothing, and has delayed the Gen 3 reveal four times since late 2025 on the stated grounds of withholding the design until production is close.

Crowdsourced tracking says just eight Tesla robotaxis carried passengers in Austin in the seven days to 22 September 2026, against 476 VINs registered with the Texas DMV and 179 seen on the road in 30 days. The post-Cybercab surge above 100 has dissipated, leaving the service roughly where it launched in June 2025.

Tesla FSD v14.3.9 is raising false 'poor camera visibility' warnings and booking owners into service appointments they do not need. Tesla has acknowledged the bug and is cancelling the appointments itself. Whether v14.3.10 fixes it is still unknown.

France opened a consultation on 17 September 2026 on a draft arrêté adding a third éco-score category for larger cars — 7+ seats, a 410-litre boot or 550 km of range. It keeps the 21,000 kg CO₂-eq ceiling while the middle band tightens to 19,300 kg. Consultation closes 7 October.

Tesla's robotics team has been auditing component suppliers in Zhejiang province ahead of Optimus mass production, per the South China Morning Post citing two executives with ties to the manufacturers. The three named firms — Tuopu (chassis and actuators), Ningbo Joyson (sensors) and Zhejiang Sanhua (thermal management) — all already supply Tesla's vehicle business. Bloomberg reported their shares rose on the news. Order-volume figures circulating elsewhere do not trace to either outlet and do not reconcile with each other.

Volkswagen's search for an outside investor in MOIA, its autonomous mobility arm, failed in its first round according to Manager Magazin, with Uber and Lyft both withdrawing. VW has invested roughly 2 billion euros already and reportedly cannot carry alone the further billion needed to reach commercial operation in the 2030s. Talks broke down over per-kilometre versus per-vehicle payment, whether the ID. Buzz AD would be the vehicle, and contract length. Volkswagen has not commented.

At a battery conference in Zaozhuang on 17 September 2026, Sunwoda launched a 15C flash-charging system claiming 10-97% in nine minutes at room temperature and 15 minutes at -20C, plus 10,000 megawatt charging stations by the end of 2027. Sunwoda first showed a 15C pack in April; what is new is the system packaging and the charging network. The cells Tesla actually buys from Sunwoda are 3C, and no vehicle has been named for the 15C product.

Leapmotor's CTC 3.0 High-Low Fusion Battery, shown at its Tech Day on 16 September 2026, runs low-voltage systems off the traction pack's own cells and removes the separate 12-volt battery, with production from 2027. ADAC attributes 45.4% of all breakdowns to that component. Tesla switched from lead-acid to a lithium low-voltage battery around 2021 but still carries one.

UN Regulation No. 79 caps remote parking at 6 metres, which is why Tesla's Actually Smart Summon barely works in Europe. UNECE has proposed raising that to 10 metres, or 15 where the car stays in the driver's line of sight, after carmaker body OICA and supplier body CLEPA asked for it. North America allows 65 metres. The change is a proposal with no adoption date; if it passes it would reach cars over the air.

XPeng is trying to turn its self-driving and smart-cockpit technology into a licensing business, courting carmakers, suppliers and software firms well beyond its existing Volkswagen deal, according to a Reuters report on 18 September 2026. A strategic commercialisation team was formed around March 2026. No customers have been named. It is the same playbook Tesla has pitched for Full Self-Driving since 2021 — one that Ford's chief executive publicly declined and that Elon Musk admitted in November 2025 automakers had rejected.

Brussels has asked Beijing to voluntarily limit Chinese-built hybrid sales in Europe to around 15% of the EU market, the Financial Times reported on 17 September 2026, with an anti-subsidy investigation already being prepared if China refuses. Chinese hybrid imports rose more than tenfold, from 3,800 vehicles in October 2024 to about 50,000 in July 2026, because hybrids pay the 10% baseline duty while Chinese BEVs pay up to 45.3%.

On 17 September 2026 Goldman Sachs analyst Mark Delaney cut Tesla's Q3 delivery forecast to 435,000 vehicles from 490,000, and Q4 to 475,000 from 515,000, citing sales tracking below consensus in the United States, China and Europe. Seoul Economic Daily reports that Samsung has begun trial production of Tesla's AI5 chip at its Taylor, Texas plant, the first 2-nanometer work there and earlier than the planned November start. Neither company has confirmed it. Yield verification is targeted for the end of 2026 and volume supply for 2027. Musk has said AI5 is destined for Optimus and Tesla's training clusters rather than its vehicles, because AI4 is already enough for FSD.

Tesla has lowered four published dimensions for the Chinese-market Model Y L: overall height from 1668 mm to 1664 mm, unladen ground clearance from 169 mm to 166 mm, loaded clearance from 122 mm to 118 mm and front overhang from 896 mm to 889 mm. The Tesla Robotaxi app has gained six passenger controls the mainline Tesla app does not have, including 3D vent aiming, seat position sliders, ambient lighting colours, in-app YouTube, a Grok button and music integrations. Tesla has said nothing about bringing them across.

The Dutch Miljoenennota presented on 15 September 2026 introduces a greentimerregeling cutting company-car tax on EVs aged five to eight years from 22% to 14%, capped at a €65,000 catalogue value and limited to three years per car. Sources disagree on whether it starts in 2028 or 2029.

NHTSA has reportedly issued a formal Special Order to Tesla, dated 10 September 2026, requiring the company to explain under oath how a car with no steering wheel, no pedals and no mirrors complies with six Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. The 500 kW peak he mentions is not new — Tesla announced that in November 2024 — and no before-and-after times were published.
