Tesla's six-seat Model Y L has its official EPA range ratings, and both figures come in above the numbers Tesla published on its own configurator when the car went on sale.

The Model Y L Premium All-Wheel Drive is certified at 332 miles (534 km) on the standard 19-inch Machina 2.0 wheels and 328 miles (528 km) on the optional 20-inch Uberhelix.

The wheel upgrade is nearly free

The number worth acting on is not the beat against Tesla's estimate. It is the four-mile gap between the two wheel options.

Larger wheels normally cost range, and on several Teslas the penalty is steep enough to be a genuine purchase decision rather than a styling one. Here it is about 1.2% between a 19 and a 20. A buyer who prefers the Uberhelix wheels is giving up almost nothing in certified range to have them, which is not something that can be said of most wheel upgrades in the line-up.

Why there was an estimate to beat

Tesla routinely lists in-house range projections on the configurator before EPA certification completes, then replaces them with the certified figure once it lands. Those pre-certification numbers tend to be conservative, and this is now the second time the Model Y L has come in ahead of them: Edmunds' real-world test returned 358 miles (576 km), as covered in the Model Y L's Edmunds result and its appearance in Europe's configurator code.

It is worth being clear about what the certified figure represents. The Model Y L is longer and heavier than the standard Model Y and carries a third row, all of which works against efficiency. Landing above Tesla's own projection anyway says the powertrain and aerodynamic work absorbed the extra mass better than Tesla's pre-certification modelling assumed.

What this does and does not tell a European buyer

Less than it appears, and the reason matters.

EPA ratings come from a US test cycle. Europe certifies on WLTP, a different procedure that generally returns a higher number for the same car, so 332 miles cannot be converted into a European figure by changing the units. The Model Y L is also not yet on sale in Europe; it has so far only surfaced in the region's configurator code.

When a European WLTP figure does arrive it will almost certainly read higher than 534 km. That will not mean the car improved.

The other Model Y L story

Range is not the only thing the Model Y L is producing numbers for. Owners in China have been reporting rear suspension sagging on the extended-wheelbase car, a separate matter from certification and one Tesla has not publicly addressed.

Both belong in the same picture for anyone waiting on a European launch: the car's certified efficiency is better than advertised, and its earliest owners have found a structural complaint worth watching.
