Tesla's Automations app, the if-this-then-that tool that has let Chinese owners script their cars since February, is sitting in the firmware of European cars with its switch set to off. On 12 October 2026 Polish developer Maciej P. Wilczyński posted a video of the app running on a Tesla in Europe. "It seems that it's now fully polished and present in latest firmware revisions, but hidden behind a feature flag," he wrote.

A feature flag is a software switch that lets Tesla ship finished code to the whole fleet while keeping it invisible until the company decides to turn it on. Wilczyński credited the team of Michał Gapiński, the developer behind the Tesla Android project, with flipping that switch on their own car. Gapiński followed up with a second video and a first routine: his wife now gets a spoken reminder to use FSD every time her seatbelt is fastened. "It's like the first version of Shortcuts on iOS," he wrote.

What the app can do

The app follows the pattern Tesla introduced in China with update 2025.45.32.1: pick a trigger, add optional conditions, chain one or more actions. NotATeslaApp, which first reported the app in January, catalogued the menus in the European build and found them fully translated.

Group Triggers Actions
Time and environment Time, sunrise, sunset, outside temperature, air quality, brightness Delay
Occupancy Seat occupied, seatbelt buckled or unbuckled, per seat Seat climate, steering wheel heater
Doors and windows Door, window, frunk and trunk state, child lock Open or lock windows, child lock, frunk, trunk, glovebox
Driving Gear, speed, odometer Acceleration mode, regenerative braking
Charging Charging state, charge port, battery level, phone pad Charge port
Navigation and location Arrived at or left a place, destination set, time to arrival Navigate home, to work or to a location, voice guidance
Climate HVAC state Every climate zone, fan, A/C, intake, wipers, defrost
Voice, phone, media Voice trigger, phone call state Spoken announcement, phone call, play a song or playlist, volume
Lights and display No triggers Dome, accent, footwell, headlights, rear fog lights, display theme, Wi-Fi

Three limits are built in, according to NotATeslaApp's reading of the build. Automations run only while the centre display is on. They cannot fire while Autopilot or FSD is engaged. And no action can control FSD, which in Europe is now sold as Tesla Assisted Driving, so a routine can remind a driver to use it, as Gapiński's does, but cannot engage it.

Where it came from

Tesla's own release note for the Chinese launch was short: "Use the new 'Automations' app to create a personalized vehicle experience. You can build custom automation routines for different daily scenarios." Its example was a car that, when the driver's door opens with someone in the driver's seat, says "Please don't forget to take your personal belongings." NotATeslaApp reported that note on 28 January 2026, and early Chinese users showed routines such as switching on Bioweapon Defense Mode when air quality is poor and lighting the cabin when a door opens.

Since then the app has not left China. Tesla has not announced it for any other market, and nothing in the European build gives a date. NotATeslaApp calls it "a strong candidate for this year's Holiday Update", Tesla's December release; that is the outlet's reading, not a Tesla statement. The spring 2026 update, where Drive Tesla Canada had expected it, shipped without it.

What this means for an owner

Nothing changes in a standard car. Flipping a feature flag needs access to the vehicle's software that ordinary owners do not have, and Tesla has not said how the finished, translated app relates to any release schedule. What the videos establish is narrower and still useful: the work of localising Automations for Europe is done, the feature set matches China's, and the only thing between it and a European car is a switch Tesla controls.
