A Model Y turning left in Batavia, Illinois in March 2026 hit a pickup that had right of way, killing front-seat passenger Maggie Espinosa, 37. Tesla's report to NHTSA marks the driver-assist system 'Verified Engaged' and the pre-crash movement as a left turn at 24 mph. No public account of the crash mentioned automation, and the narrative and software version are redacted.

Tesla has published its Article 39 FSD (Supervised) Dashboard, eight safety studies covering more than 3 billion kilometres, five weeks before the EU's Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles votes on 6 October on extending the Dutch RDW approval bloc-wide. Five countries have recognised the approval nationally, representing about 8.9% of the EU population; approval needs 15 of 27 states and 65% of the population.

Texas DPS has published Tesla's Cybercab First Responder Interaction Plan, version 1.1 dated 16 July 2026, three days before the Austin launch event. It declares the two-seater an SAE Level 4 system with no steering wheel or pedals, sets out how officers stop and de-power it, and reproduces the Model Y Robotaxi plan's operational design domain word for word.

Tesla's Cybercab entries on the Texas Motor Carrier Credentialing System jumped from seven to 45 on 31 August 2026, filed under Tesla Robotaxi, LLC with 5YJA-prefix VINs, three days before the 3 September launch event in Austin. Registration is the legal prerequisite for commercial automated operation, not proof of passenger service. Cybercabs have separately been filmed running in Austin with nobody aboard.

Tesla's NHTSA filings for two fatal 2020 Model 3 crashes — on I-4 in Florida on 6 October 2025 and on Loop 202 in Mesa, Arizona on 31 October 2025 — both mark the driver-assist system as Verified Engaged and pre-crash speed at 0 mph. Both cars were rear-ended by trucks while stopped in live freeway lanes. The software version is redacted, so Autopilot cannot be distinguished from FSD.

Tesla enlarged its Austin Robotaxi service area to about 288 square miles on 31 August 2026, adding roughly 24 square miles for a 9% increase and extending north toward Pflugerville. It is the first boundary change in about ten months. The map grew days after a Dallas expansion and three days before the Cybercab launch event, but operating hours were recently cut to 6 AM-10 PM and the unsupervised fleet remains in the low tens.

Tesla told NHTSA that driver assistance was "Verified Engaged" when a 2025 Model 3 crashed at 104 mph in Clute, Texas on 20 May 2026, killing 23-year-old Steven Alvarez. Police had said only that they suspected a medical episode; neither the speed nor the automation appeared in any public account. Tesla redacted the crash narrative and the software version as confidential, as it does on 99.9% of its reports across nearly 4,000 filed driver-assist crashes.

Tesla enlarged its Robotaxi geofence in Dallas on 29 August 2026, posting a new map with no square mileage, no named neighbourhoods and no other detail. Dallas opened in April at roughly 30-35 square miles; Austin took a year to grow from about 20 to 245. The expansion lands days before the Cybercab launch event.

Lotus has switched on Hyper Pilot for Eletre owners in Germany, adding lane centring, adaptive speed and supervised overtaking on approved sections of the A3, A5, A8 and A99 between Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Munich. It runs under UN R171, the harmonised Level 2 regulation Lotus certified against in March 2026 — while Tesla's FSD Supervised is still under KBA review.

MyWheels put a Tesla running FSD (Supervised) into its Dutch car-sharing fleet on 27 August 2026 and wants at least 50 by the end of the year. On launch day there was one, in Den Bosch, and the renter is still legally the driver.

NBC News documented more than 40 accounts of Teslas on FSD failing at railroad crossings, interviewing six drivers and obtaining video from four. The most recent case, in August 2026, was recorded on FSD v14.3.7 — the newest build. NHTSA has folded level crossings into an investigation that already covers roughly 2.9 million FSD-equipped cars.

Waymo's VP of onboard software published ten lessons from 200 million-plus fully autonomous miles. Three of them are aimed squarely at how Tesla builds FSD: HD maps are worth keeping, pure end-to-end networks are a black box, and upgrading a driver-assist system into full autonomy is 'a false summit'.

Tesla told riders on 26 August that Robotaxi runs 6 AM to 10 PM, seven days a week, with a larger unsupervised fleet and smarter routing. The hours are not an expansion: the late-night cutoff was 2 AM until earlier this month and midnight at the Austin launch. Tesla gave no fleet number.

Waymo disclosed its first custom sensor-fusion ASIC at Hot Chips 2026: TSMC N5, 160 TOPS at INT8 and 80 TFLOPS at FP16, 64 MB of on-chip SRAM and under 75 W. The 1,000-TOPS figure circulating in coverage is not what Waymo presented, and the chip never runs the driving stack.

Chinese social media claimed Tesla had vacated its Shanghai FSD data centre and cut the team. Tesla China called the reports false, said the centre is operating normally and hiring is accelerating, and reported the matter to public security authorities. China is still absent from Tesla's twelve FSD subscription markets.

Waymo has confirmed Munich as its first robotaxi city in the European Union, with HD mapping starting in weeks and driverless commercial service targeted for the end of 2027. It is the company's third international market after London and Tokyo, and it lands while Tesla's FSD (Supervised) still has no EU-wide approval timeline.

A self-described Tesla Ambassador was quoted 66 minutes for a 2.3-mile Austin robotaxi ride, was told the estimate was a bug, and gave up and called an Uber. Complaints about waits and wrong drop-offs are increasingly coming from Tesla loyalists, ten days before the Cybercab launch.

The Nevada Transportation Authority unanimously approved permits on 20 August for up to 5,000 Tesla robotaxis in Clark County, plus 1,000 each for Waymo and Uber's Aviari — seven days after capping Tesla at ten vehicles.

Tesla has confirmed a Cybercab launch event in Austin on 3 September 2026, sending invitations to Robotaxi riders and promising a livestream. What launches is a two-seat car with no steering wheel joining a service that already exists.

SAMR is making Tesla recall 2,740,642 Shanghai-built Model 3 and Model Y over assisted-driving attention monitoring that relies on steering-wheel torque instead of gaze. The over-the-air fix adds cabin-camera monitoring and is effective immediately. European cars have had camera monitoring since 2022, and EU law has required it on all new vehicles since 7 July 2026.

WeRide has completed Slovakia's first autonomous robotaxi test drive, using its lidar-equipped Robotaxi GXR on a closed circuit with a safety driver aboard. Slovakia's Ministry of Transport has written a framework allowing testing with no driver at the wheel, which no other EU state has matched, while Tesla's FSD still awaits EU approval.

A Robotaxi Model Y with nobody in the driver's seat stopped for a row of plastic lane bollards in Austin, then pushed through them and kept going. It happened four weeks after Tesla's VP of AI told investors the programme had an 'impeccable' record with zero notable incidents over 380,000 driverless miles.

A San Francisco Chronicle report finds Tesla owners handing over almost all of their driving to FSD Supervised, including an Uber driver whose safety score went from 70% to 98% on it. Tesla has been deliberately reducing driver-monitoring prompts since FSD v14.3.3, tying the reduction to safety data. Europe is approving the same software on the assumption the driver stays in charge.

Ron DeSantis rode Tesla's control-free Cybercab through scripted hazards at SunTrax, Florida's state-owned autonomous-vehicle proving ground, on 11 August 2026. The venue matters more than the endorsement: Florida already lets a car with no steering wheel carry passengers on public roads with nobody inside.
