The Tesla Model Y was the most-sold used electric car in Sweden in July 2026, ending a run at the top that the Volvo XC40 had held since September 2025. The figure comes from Carla's Elbilsindex, the monthly used-EV index published by Carla, Sweden's second-largest used electric car retailer.

The Model 3 moved up too, from seventh place to fourth.

A used market that is growing and getting more expensive

8,260 used EVs changed hands in Sweden in July, 14% more than in July 2025. The median price went up rather than down — 349,900 SEK, a 2.9% rise year on year.

Metric July 2026 Year earlier
Used EVs sold 8,260 +14%
Median price 349,900 SEK +2.9%
Average range 469 km 456 km
All-wheel drive share 40% 33%

Viktor Gärdhammar, Carla's market director, reads the price rise as a mix problem rather than pure demand: summer stock is thin, and what is left skews towards premium cars with longer range and better equipment. The range and all-wheel-drive figures in the table support that — the average used EV sold in July was a more expensive kind of car than the one sold a year earlier, so a rising median price does not by itself mean every car is worth more.

Carla also reports used Tesla prices specifically rising by close to 10% between June and August.

The number sitting next to it

The same month, in the same country, Tesla's new-car business went the other way. Sweden registered 18,684 new cars in July, up 5.7%, with battery-electric share at 42.6% against 34.9% a year earlier. Tesla finished 31st among brands, down 60.1% year on year.

So Swedish buyers took more EVs than ever, and fewer of them were new Teslas — while used Teslas topped the chart.

Why the two can move in opposite directions

A used purchase and a new one are not the same decision. Buying a used Model Y is a judgement about a specific car at a specific price, and the cars in that pool were built years ago, when Tesla's Swedish volumes were high. Buying new is a live decision about the brand, its price list and everything attached to it — and Sweden is the market where Tesla has just outlasted a 1,021-day IF Metall strike, which did not make the brand uncontroversial there.

There is also a supply mechanic underneath. Weak new registrations today mean a thinner used pool in three years' time. Scarcity supports residuals, which is part of why used Tesla values are firming while new sales fall.

What it means for a Swedish owner, or a buyer

If you own a Model Y in Sweden, this is the good news in the pair: the resale market is competitive and prices are not falling. That is not universal — Dutch used EV prices fell for the first time since March, and older Model S values have collapsed even where the batteries held up.

If you are buying, treat the median as a summer figure. Thin stock is doing part of the work in that 349,900 SEK, and autumn usually brings more cars back into the market.

One caveat on the source: Elbilsindex is one retailer's index, not the national vehicle registry. It tracks the used market Carla sees, which is large but not the whole of it.
