Tesla has settled a question that has irritated Full Self-Driving users since v14 arrived: the maximum speed setting is gone, and it is not coming back. Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's AI lead, said as much directly, describing a manual speed ceiling as a design mistake rather than a missing feature.

"Max speed control is an anti pattern," Elluswamy wrote on X in reply to an owner asking for the setting back. "We are working on better learning of user's implied preferences."

What was removed

Earlier FSD builds let owners set a hard cap on how fast the car would travel while the system was engaged. It was a blunt instrument, but a predictable one — a driver uncomfortable with FSD's speed on a given road could simply pin the ceiling and stop thinking about it.

v14 dropped that control in favour of the neural network choosing speeds itself, based on road type, traffic and conditions. The intent was fewer knobs; the outcome, for a section of the owner base, was less predictability.

The replacement is implicit, not explicit

Rather than restoring the slider, Tesla is training the network to infer what each driver wants. The signal it uses is the accelerator pedal: when a driver taps it because FSD is moving too slowly, the system logs that as a preference and learns to carry more pace on that road next time.

It is a coherent design philosophy — the same one that produced Preferred Routes in the 2026 Summer Update, where the car learns the way you actually drive home instead of always recomputing the fastest path. Tesla's consistent bet is that inferred preferences beat configuration screens.

The practical difference matters, though. A slider is deterministic and takes effect immediately. Learned behaviour takes repeated trips to converge, gives no feedback about what it has concluded, and offers no way to correct it beyond driving differently.

Owners are not convinced

The pushback is not uniform, and it splits in two directions. Some owners report FSD travelling below the posted limit and holding up traffic; others say it accelerates past what they find comfortable, particularly on faster roads. Both groups previously had one lever for the problem, and both have lost it.

That frustration compounds the speed-related complaints that have followed recent builds. FSD v14.3.6 drew criticism for braking behaviour sharp enough that Tesla shipped v14.3.7 specifically to address the regressions — a reminder that when the network's judgement is off, owners currently have no override to fall back on.

Why this lands differently in Europe

Speed governance is precisely where European regulators have been most cautious about FSD. Germany's KBA has made unrestricted Autobahn speeds the sticking point in its review — an assessment that turns on how the system chooses its own speed, not on what a driver can cap it at.

Removing the manual ceiling means the network's speed selection is the whole of the safety argument. For approval authorities weighing whether to recognise the Dutch type approval, Tesla has just made its learned behaviour the only thing left to evaluate.
