Tesla has revealed its 2026 Summer Update, the seasonal over-the-air release that bundles this year's biggest consumer-facing software features into a single wave. Headlining the release is a much more capable Grok voice assistant, a navigation system that learns your habits, and a handful of quality-of-life additions that reach owners as the firmware rolls out across the fleet.

Grok can finally do things

Until now Tesla's in-car Grok assistant mostly answered questions. The Summer Update turns it into a hands-on controller for the car. Owners can trigger actions with a single natural-language sentence that previously needed several taps:

  • Phone calls — "Hey Grok, call [contact]" places a call from your paired phone.
  • Music — "Hey Grok, play [song or artist]" searches your active streaming service and adds the track straight to the queue.
  • Climate — "Hey Grok, set the temperature to 20" or "turn on the driver's seat heater."
  • Glovebox — "Hey Grok, open the glovebox," the first time Grok has been given a physical hardware actuation.

Grok can still answer general questions about the car and the world, but the shift from conversational novelty to genuine vehicle control is the story here.

Preferred Routes: navigation that remembers

One of the most practical additions is Preferred Routes. The car now remembers the paths you actually take and prioritises them, rather than always defaulting to the algorithm's fastest suggestion. Automatic Navigation — which already offered to route to Home, Work and upcoming calendar events — now also learns places you visit regularly and offers to take you there. For drivers who have a preferred way home that the map never quite picks, this closes a long-standing gap.

Vehicle wraps in the app, and Caraoke scoring

Two lighter touches round out the release. The mobile app now lets owners preview vehicle wraps, so you can see how a colour or finish looks on your own car before committing. And Caraoke — Tesla's in-car sing-along mode — now scores your performance while the car is in Park, saving high scores to your Tesla profile.

When European owners get it

As with every seasonal update, the Summer Update ships as a staged over-the-air rollout rather than a single-day switch. It reaches early builds first and widens over the following weeks as Tesla monitors feedback, so European owners should expect the features to appear as the firmware wave reaches their region rather than immediately.
