Tesla began shipping the software that lets a Cybertruck and a Powerwall 3 back up the same house at the same time on 10 September 2026. Until now owners of both had to pick one.
What actually changed
Powershare — the Cybertruck's ability to power a home through an outage — has worked since 2024, but only on its own. A house with a Powerwall already installed could use the Powerwall or the truck, not both, because the two could not share the job of holding up the grid inside the house.
Running together, Tesla says the pair delivers more than three days of backup. The company describes the truck's contribution as the equivalent of nine additional Powerwalls, which is arithmetic rather than marketing: the Cybertruck carries a 123 kWh pack and a Powerwall 3 stores 13.5 kWh, so the truck is worth about nine of them in stored energy. What it is not worth is nine of them in output — Powershare feeds the house at up to 11.5 kW regardless of how much is left in the pack.

The hardware requirements have not moved: a Powershare Gateway and a Universal Wall Connector, an installation owners have generally been quoted around $4,000 for. This release covers Powerwall 3. Tesla has not said when, or whether, older Powerwall generations follow.
Two years late, for a reason Tesla explained
Tesla first promised this for 2025, then mid-2026, then summer 2026. TeslAnt wrote about the third missed deadline two weeks ago, when the company had stopped offering new dates at all.
The obstacle was never marketing. Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill put it plainly: two grid-forming devices have to negotiate which one forms the supply and which one follows, continuously, as each one's state of charge changes. A grid-forming device creates the voltage and frequency reference everything else in the house follows. Put two on one panel without a referee and you get the failure mode that islanding safety standards exist to prevent — energising circuits that are supposed to be dead. Morrill added that the negotiation had to work without a network connection and across every Powerwall generation already in the field.
Shipping it for Powerwall 3 only is consistent with that explanation. Powerwall 3 is the generation whose power electronics Tesla controls most completely.
Why this matters in Europe, where the truck is not sold
Cybertruck is not sold in Europe and nothing suggests it will be. The engineering problem underneath it is not Cybertruck-specific, and it is the reason vehicle-to-home is still rare here.
Any house that already has storage runs into the same arbitration question the moment a car wants to join in. Europe has been assembling the rules — the ISO 15118-20 amendment that makes AC vehicle-to-grid workable landed in July — while Tesla's own European path to exporting power remains a 344-step retrofit for 2.4 kW.
What Tesla has now demonstrated is that the hard part is solvable in a shipping product. That is the useful precedent, even for owners who will never see the truck that proved it.
