For a Tesla owner in a Prague flat with no garage, the city's answer to home charging has always been the lamp post outside. That answer has just been given two more years to arrive.
Prague has extended the contracts behind its public-lighting-and-charging programme — Upgrade sítě veřejného osvětlení pro účely dobíjení e-mobility — from the end of 2026 to 31 December 2028. The extension covers the city's agreements with the grid operator PREdistribuce and the municipal company Technologie hlavního města Prahy (THMP). The city's stated reason is not a change of plan but a change of pace: the opening projects took longer than expected, and the money set aside for them was not spent.
What the programme actually builds
The unglamorous part is the point of it. Prague is not installing chargers on lamp posts so much as making lamp posts capable of receiving them later — running a properly dimensioned power connection to selected columns while the street is already open for lighting and distribution-grid renewal, and leaving the charging hardware for a subsequent step.
That sequencing is the whole argument. Rebuilding the lighting network and the distribution network in one dig avoids reopening the same pavement twice, which is why the two are contractually tied together. About 150 columns are due to be prepared this way during 2026, at roughly 100 million koruna (about €4.1 million).
"We are continuing to modernise public lighting and link it with the development of e-mobility," said deputy mayor Michal Hroza.
The pilot is four years old
This is not a new idea in Prague, which is what makes the slippage worth noting. THMP switched on the pilot in December 2022 in Vinohrady, in Prague 2, across Moravská, Korunní, Chodská, Kladská, Slezská and Slovenská streets.

At the time, 55 charging-ready columns had been prepared across the city, with 240 planned for 2023 and "multiples of that" in the years after. Four years on, the 2026 figure is 150.
What 22 kW means in a Tesla
Useful, and slower than the number suggests. A station rated at 2 × 22 kW splits its capacity between two cars, and the ceiling that binds is the car's onboard AC charger, not the post: a European Model 3 or Model Y takes a maximum of 11 kW on three-phase AC. Left overnight, that is comfortably a full battery from a normal day's driving — this is destination charging where the destination is your own street, not a substitute for a Supercharger stop.
What the city has not published is the part owners will ask about next: how many prepared columns have actually been fitted with charging hardware since the pilot, and what a kilowatt-hour costs at one today.
The gap, and where Europe has got to
Prague expects around 180,000 electric cars in the city by 2030 and roughly 4,500 charging points to serve them. Set 150 prepared columns against that and the arithmetic is not close, even before the second step of mounting chargers on them.
Street charging is where the Czech capital's EV growth is decided. The city can and does build fast-charging hubs, including the country's largest with 161 points, but a hub does not help a driver who needs to leave a car parked overnight. Western Europe is further along the same curve rather than on a different one: France passed 200,000 public charging points this summer, and the Netherlands is testing shared charging bays for exactly this kerbside problem.
Bottom line
For a Prague Tesla owner without a driveway, the practical read is unchanged: the lamp post outside is a plan for 2028, not a charging option for this winter.
