Czechia imported nearly 10,000 used battery-electric cars in the first nine months of 2026, 66% more than a year earlier, and almost a quarter of them were Teslas. That is the finding of an analysis the transport research centre CDV published on 21 October, based on Ministry of Transport registration data. Its brand chart counts 2,411 used Teslas, more than any other brand and 24.5% of all used electric imports.
That is more Teslas than were registered new. CDV's September release put Tesla's new electric registrations for January–September at 2,009, as TeslAnt reported in its coverage of Czechia's record September. Counting both channels, about 4,400 Teslas joined the Czech fleet this year, and more than half of them arrived second-hand from abroad.
The brands Czechs import
| Rank | Brand | Used BEVs imported, Jan–Sep 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tesla | 2,411 |
| 2 | Volkswagen | 2,051 |
| 3 | Škoda | 1,216 |
| 4 | BMW | 546 |
| 5 | Audi | 493 |
| 6 | Mercedes-Benz | 312 |
| 7 | Hyundai | 265 |
CDV's brand chart counts imported cars still registered on 30 September. Tesla is not the only brand whose used imports outnumber its new registrations. Volkswagen's are three times larger: 2,051 imported against 666 registered new. Škoda is the exception. As the domestic brand, it registered 4,674 new electric cars against 1,216 imports.
Where they come from
| Country of origin | Share of used BEV imports |
|---|---|
| Germany | 46.8% |
| Netherlands | 21.6% |
| France | 7.4% |
| Austria | 4.7% |
| Belgium | 3.7% |
| Sweden | 2.8% |
| Italy | 2.3% |
Four-year-old cars were the most common, followed by five- and three-year-old ones. By year of first registration, CDV's chart shows about 2,400 cars from 2022, 2,100 from 2021 and 1,900 from 2023.
A bigger share every year
Used imports made up 42% of all electric cars registered in Czechia this year, up from 39.4% in 2025 and 26% in 2024. Of the roughly 80,000 battery-electric cars on Czech roads at the end of September, more than 27,000, or 34%, came in used. Private buyers accounted for 59.7% of this year's used-import registrations. Prague led with 1,859, ahead of Brno with 363 and Ostrava with 251.
"The secondary market for electric cars in Czechia is maturing," said Pavel Havránek, who heads CDV's mobility and safety division. Germany remains by far the biggest source.
What it means for buyers
For a Czech buyer, the typical used Tesla is a car of about four years old from Germany or the Netherlands. Battery wear is the usual worry. CDV repeats the result of its study of 3,171 used EVs with AURES: median battery health was 96.1% for cars under three years old and 90.0% for cars older than six. Its advice is to judge each car's battery, not its age.
The pattern is stronger next door. In Slovakia, almost nine in ten Teslas registered this year came in used from abroad. In Czechia the share is just over half, but the used channel is now the larger of the two.
