Czechia registered 2,141 new battery-electric cars in September 2026, 57% more than a year earlier and a record 11.2% of new passenger-car registrations. The figures come from an analysis by the transport research centre CDV, built on Ministry of Transport and SDA data. In CDV's two-year monthly table, the previous high was August 2026, at 8.45%.

Over nine months, Czechia has registered 13,806 electric cars, up 36%, for a 7.4% share of the new-car market. Neighbouring Austria, for comparison, passed 33% in September.

The September numbers

Czechia 2026 2025
New BEV registrations, September 2,141 1,360
BEV share of new cars, September 11.2% 6.4%
New BEV registrations, January–September 13,806 10,180
BEV share of new cars, January–September 7.4% 5.6%

More than 80,500 battery-electric cars are now on Czech roads. Czechia also imported 10,122 used electric cars in the first nine months, 64% more than a year earlier and 8.4% of all used-car imports.

Two brands, less than half

Rank Brand BEVs, Jan–Sep 2026 Share Change
1 Škoda 4,674 33.9% +26%
2 Tesla 2,009 14.6% +28%
3 Mercedes-Benz 758 5.5% +92%
4 Volkswagen 666 4.8% +5%
5 Ford 601 4.4% +46%
9 BYD 413 3.0% +556%

Škoda and Tesla together hold 48.5% of this year's electric registrations, down from 51.7% a year earlier. Neither is shrinking: both grew by more than a quarter. The market grew faster, at 36%, and the brands below them grew faster still. Mercedes-Benz nearly doubled on the back of the CLA, Toyota rose 70%, and BYD went from 63 cars to 413. Hyundai is the only top-ten brand registering fewer electric cars than a year ago, down 7%.

Where Tesla stands

The Model Y is Czechia's third best-selling electric car this year, with 1,461 registrations, up 32%. The Model 3 is fourth with 527, up 21%. Only Škoda's Enyaq, on 2,227, and Elroq, on 1,984, are ahead.

September narrowed the gap. CDV's August release put the Model Y on 1,218, so on the difference between the two releases it added 243 registrations in September. That is more than the Elroq's 190 over the same month, and close to the Enyaq's 276. The Elroq is now the only top-ten model below its 2025 total, down 3%, while Škoda's new Epiq has already reached sixth with 291 registrations.

Not yet an emissions story

CDV's Pavel Havránek notes that the record share has barely moved fleet emissions. New cars registered this year average 127 g of CO₂ per km, 1 g less than in 2025, and diesel still holds 20.4% of the new-car market. Last year only Slovakia had higher average new-car emissions in the EU.

What it means

Czechia is still a two-brand electric market: Tesla is the only challenger to Škoda with a double-digit share. But the two no longer hold half of it, and September's record came with a broader field: the CLA, the Puma, the C-HR and the Epiq all sit in the top ten. For Czech buyers, that means more choice beyond the two default options.
