The Tesla Model Y was the most registered electric car in Slovakia in the first nine months of 2026, counting new and imported used cars together, and the Model 3 was second. Most of those Teslas did not come from a Slovak showroom. According to the vehicle-history register RPZV, almost 87% of all Teslas registered in Slovakia this year were brought in from abroad.

RPZV published its Automonitor for January to September on 15 October 2026. It shows a market where electric cars are growing fast from a low base, mostly through used imports.

The numbers

January–September 2026 Value
Electric cars registered, new and imported used 10,603 (+44%)
of which new 4,666
of which imported used 5,937 (56%)
Record month September, 1,428
Electric share of new-car registrations, Slovakia 7.4%
Electric share of new-car registrations, EU (ACEA, January–August) 21.7%
Electric cars on Slovak roads, 13 September 36,864 of 2.97 million vehicles

In the third quarter the two channels were almost level, with 1,743 new and 1,755 imported electric cars. September was only the second month this year in which new electric registrations beat imports.

Tesla still leads used imports, but its lead is shrinking

Tesla remains the biggest brand among imported used electric cars, but its import volume barely moved year on year. Its share of that segment fell from 37% to 26%. The mix changed: Model Y imports rose 40.6% and Model 3 imports fell 26.1%. Volkswagen (+132%) and Škoda (+234%) together supplied about 53% of the growth in electric imports. The average imported electric car is 3.77 years old, and Germany supplies about 36% of all used imports.

New cars: Škoda first, BYD third, Tesla near 5%

Among new electric registrations, Škoda leads with 22%, followed by Toyota and BYD, which has 10.2%. Tesla, which opened its first Slovak sales and service centre in Bratislava in June, has almost 5% of new electric registrations, up from a very low base. Counting new and imported cars together, the ranking runs Model Y, Model 3, Škoda Elroq, Volkswagen ID.4, BYD Sealion 7 and Volkswagen ID.3.

What it means for buyers importing a used Tesla

Slovakia approved FSD (Supervised) on 16 October. In Czechia the software reaches only cars with the Hardware 4 computer, broadly those delivered from mid-2023, and Tesla has not said whether Slovakia will differ. With imported electric cars averaging almost four years old, a used Tesla brought in today may well predate Hardware 4, so buyers who want the feature should check which computer the car has before importing it.

RPZV also checked the histories of imported cars across all fuel types. It found earlier damage on 24% of them and suspected odometer tampering on almost 14%.
