Three days ago the story was that Tesla had found 38 kilometres of Model 3 range in a set of tyres — the European base rear-wheel-drive car going from 534 to 572 km WLTP on a low-rolling-resistance Giti fitment, with no change to battery, motor or software.
Now the tyre itself is the story. Autoevolution reports that European owners are posting photographs and video of the Giti Control P10's tread deteriorating after a few thousand kilometres, with damage ranging from moderate to severe. Some of the reports come from the front axle of rear-wheel-drive cars — the axle that does no driving at all.
Tesla's answer is that owners are driving wrong
According to the same report, Tesla has told owners raising the issue not to accelerate too hard, particularly while cornering, rather than treating the wear as a fault with the tyre.
That response is doing a lot of work. On a rear-wheel-drive Model 3 the front tyres receive no torque, so acceleration cannot scrub the front tread the way it can the rear. Damage appearing on the front axle is not explained by an enthusiastic right foot, and pointing at driving style does not address it.
What is established and what is not
The evidence here is owner reports circulating on social media, gathered by a trade outlet. It is worth being clear about what that is and is not:

No safety authority has looked at this, there is no recall, and nobody has published a controlled wear test on the fitment. Treating it as a proven defect is ahead of the evidence; treating it as nothing ignores photographs from multiple owners of a tyre that has been on European cars for a matter of months.
Independent testing does show a tyre of trade-offs. Tyre Reviews' results put the P10 at the front of the field on wet metrics, merely competitive on dry roads, toward the back on noise, and inconsistent on rolling resistance — the property the whole range gain rests on.
What a Model 3 buyer should take from it
The range figure is real and measured on the standard 18-inch wheel. What has changed is our previous advice to match the P10 specification when the originals wear out, in order to keep the 38 km. If the tyre wears out unusually early, matching it means buying it more often, and the running-cost arithmetic behind the range gain shifts.
Two practical points follow. Inspect the fronts as well as the rears at the first service, because that is where the reports concentrate and where nothing about the drivetrain predicts wear. And Tesla's own protection plans reprice on 1 October, with performance wheel-and-tyre cover rising 50% — worth pricing before rather than after.
The wider point is that WLTP rewards the tyre and the owner pays for it. A fitment chosen to move an official number is optimised against a laboratory cycle, not against 60,000 kilometres of real road. Whether the P10 turns out to be a bad tyre or a badly-suited one, the cost lands in the same place.
