Tesla put the Cybercab into paying service in Austin on 3 September 2026, and the two-seater arrived with a price advantage. On 4 September, a rider heading to Lustre Pearl East was quoted $7.77 for a Cybercab against $12.10 for a four-seat Model Y robotaxi on the same trip — a discount of roughly 35% for choosing the purpose-built car.

That advantage did not survive the first weekend.

What the app showed on Sunday

Rider screenshots posted to Reddit and reported by Tesla Oracle on 7 September cover a 1.3-mile trip from Cabana Club to the same Lustre Pearl East destination, with the Robotaxi and Uber apps queried side by side:

The interesting column is not the Cybercab's. It is the Model Y's. Across those three days the Model Y robotaxi fare moved by six cents, from $12.10 to $12.04. The Cybercab went from $7.77 to $15.24 — close to double — and ended up about 27% dearer than the larger car it was meant to undercut, and nearly twice the price of an Uber X that would arrive in seven minutes rather than an hour.

Forty-five cars is the explanation

Tesla's Austin Cybercab fleet stands at roughly 45 vehicles, against the Model Ys that have been working the city since last year. The Robotaxi app now asks which vehicle you want, and a launch-week novelty attached to a few dozen cars inside a service that stops at 10 PM is a textbook scarcity problem. The hour-plus wait is the same signal as the fare: demand is well past supply, and the price is doing the rationing.

The number to treat carefully is the launch-day $7.77: it was quoted when almost nobody could get a Cybercab either, making it an introductory figure rather than a marginal cost. Neither snapshot says what a ride costs Tesla to provide.

Why this matters in Europe

No European city has a Tesla robotaxi, and none will before the Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles votes on FSD (Supervised) on 6 October. The pricing question is the one Europe inherits, though. The case for robotaxis displacing taxis here rests on a driverless car being cheaper per mile than a driven one, and Austin is the only place that number is being set in public. A fleet of 45 cars pricing itself above Uber does not prove the economics fail at scale — it shows that scale is the whole argument, and none of it has been demonstrated yet.

What Tesla has not said

Tesla publishes no surge-pricing policy for the Robotaxi network, has not confirmed that demand pricing moved these fares, and has never stated a target price per mile for the Cybercab. The fares above are what two apps showed one rider on one route, captured in screenshots and relayed by an outlet — not a fare table. A different hour or day would produce different numbers, and a larger fleet different ones again.

What the snapshots do establish is narrower and still worth having: within four days of launch, the cheapest way to hail a driverless Tesla in Austin was the car with a steering wheel, and the cheapest way to get to Lustre Pearl East was a human driver. The economic case for a two-seat purpose-built robotaxi rests on it eventually being the cheapest option on the screen. This weekend it was the most expensive one.
