Volkswagen revealed the ID. Tiguan in full on 9 October 2026, eleven days after it retired the ID.4 name. The car replaces both the ID.4 and the ID.5. In Germany it starts at €42,695, presales open on 13 October, and the first cars reach customers in early 2027. It will be built in Emden.
Until today the ID. Tiguan was a name and a set of photos. The ID.4 has been the Model Y's most direct volume rival in Europe, so its successor's price and range matter to anyone cross-shopping a Tesla.
The line-up
| Version | Battery | Power | WLTP range |
|---|---|---|---|
| RWD | 58 kWh LFP | 140 kW (190 PS) | about 454 km |
| RWD | 77 kWh NMC | 210 kW (286 PS) | about 605 km |
| 4MOTION AWD | 77 kWh NMC | 220 kW (299 PS) | about 564 km |
The per-version ranges come from Forococheselectricos; Volkswagen's German announcement says "up to 600 km". GoingElectric notes that the release does not say which version the €42,695 buys, or whether the battery figures are net or gross. Prices for the 77 kWh versions have not been published.
The 58 kWh car charges from 10 to 80% in 26 minutes, according to Autoblog. Volkswagen has not published peak DC charging power for either battery.
The rest of the specification is practical rather than radical. The boot holds 534 litres and a front trunk adds 32 litres. The towing limit is 1,800 kg with the smaller battery and 2,000 kg with the larger one. An optional PowerSocket adapter provides vehicle-to-load. The platform is MEB+, an update of the architecture the ID.4 has used since 2020, and the trim levels are Trend, Life, Style and R-Line.
How it compares with the Model Y
| ID. Tiguan (base) | Model Y Standard | |
|---|---|---|
| German list price | from €42,695 | €39,990 |
| WLTP range | about 454 km | 534 km |
| Orders | presales from 13 October 2026 | on sale since October 2025 |
| Deliveries | early 2027 | now |
On list prices, the cheapest ID. Tiguan costs €2,705 more than the cheapest Model Y, and its WLTP range is about 80 km shorter. That compares base car with base car. The Model Y Standard is Tesla's simplified entry version, and the equipment Volkswagen includes at €42,695 is not yet known.
What it means for a Model Y buyer
The ID. Tiguan does not undercut the Model Y. On paper its entry version costs more and goes less far. That is a different position from the Chinese challengers, such as the XPeng L03, which opened below the Model Y's price.
Volkswagen is selling the badge and the cabin instead: a familiar name, physical controls in place of the ID.4's touch surfaces, vehicle-to-load through an optional adapter, and a dealer network Tesla does not have.
The 77 kWh car's roughly 605 km WLTP rating is the figure to set against the Model Y Premium versions, but Volkswagen has not priced it. Two things to wait for before deciding are that price and the equipment list at €42,695. Neither is public yet.
