Tesla has changed the shape of the Cybertruck's side repeater camera housing, and the reason is rain.
Lead Cybertruck engineer Wes Morrill posted the change on X on 9 September 2026. The old housing sat completely flush inside a smooth, triangular indentation in the body panel. The new one introduces sculpted ridges and a sharp vertical fin, which redirect airflow — and with it, water — away from the lens.
A fin instead of a pump
The point is what the fix avoids. Keeping a camera lens clear normally costs something: a washer nozzle, a line, a pump, a controller, and the wiring to tie them together. Tesla has instead shaped the plastic so that the air moving past the truck does the work.
Morrill's stated benefit is that the housing channels rainwater and spray off the lens without adding any additional cost, and without the pumps and wiring an active system would need. A passive part cannot fail in the way a pump can, and it does not need a fluid reservoir topped up.
Why a camera housing is worth a paragraph
Tesla removed radar and ultrasonic sensors and made cameras the whole of the car's perception. A lens with a film of road spray on it is not a cosmetic problem — it is a degraded sensor, and the car tells you so by dropping features. Anyone who has driven a Tesla through a wet European winter has seen the "cameras obscured" message and lost lane keeping for it.
The side repeaters matter specifically for lane changes and for the blind-spot view. If the surface most exposed to spray from the wheels can be kept clear by geometry alone, that is a durable answer to a complaint that software cannot fix.
The change nobody gets told about
This is the second Cybertruck production change reported in two days. On Monday Morrill described a self-reinforcing polypropylene aero shield, covered in our report on the Cybertruck's new underbody shield, as part of a broader effort to make the pickup cheaper to build, more reliable and easier to service.
Both illustrate a method Tesla applies across the range: parts change when they are ready, not at a model-year boundary. Components are upgraded as existing inventory runs out, which means there is no announcement, no press release and no clean cut-off.
That has a practical consequence, and it is the honest caveat here. Tesla has published no VIN breakpoint and no build-week range for the new housing, so an owner cannot tell from the outside which version their truck left the factory with, short of comparing the panel to a photograph. Nor has Tesla said whether the new housing can be retrofitted to earlier trucks — a question that matters more than usual, because unlike a hidden underbody shield, this one is visible from the kerb.
What it means in Europe
The Cybertruck is not sold in the European Union, and nothing here changes that. What travels is the approach. The same continuous-iteration method produced the Model Y's Grünheide-built revisions, and a passive, zero-cost answer to camera contamination is exactly the kind of change that reaches cars sold here without a version number attached to it.
