France registered 65,247 new battery-electric cars in September 2026 — 41.6% of the market, and a record. The Tesla Model Y took 8,183 of them and finished first, not just among electric cars but across the whole French market.

The total market was 156,629 cars, up 11.60% year on year, according to the PFA. BEV volume rose 107.5% against that, which is what moved the share. August's record was 38%; the month before that, 35%. France has now beaten its own BEV record three months running.

The September ranking

Rank Model September 2026
1 Tesla Model Y 8,183
2 Renault 5 5,224
3 Renault Twingo 4,992

The Model Y's year-to-date total is 37,840.

That is up 141.5% on the same point last year. Tesla as a brand grew 61.86% year on year in September on PFA's figures — the gap between those two numbers is the Model 3 and the older cars, not the Model Y.

The Renault 5 is the number that deserves a second look. Through August it trailed the Model Y by under 3,000 cars for the year, and September's 8,183-to-5,224 month will have widened that gap. The R5 is not fading — 5,224 in a month is a strong result — but the Model Y pulled away in the month that mattered.

The Twingo is the genuine newcomer. It was fourth in August on 1,574 units; in September it more than tripled to 4,992 and took third. That is the fastest ramp of any electric car in France this year.

Why the share moved

Two policy levers, both aimed squarely at the cars below the Model Y.

The third round of leasing social is running, and the eco-score rules continue to decide which cars qualify. Both channel buyers towards small, French- or European-built superminis — which is precisely the R5 and the Twingo. The programme is not what put the Model Y on top; it is what filled the two places behind it.

That distinction matters when reading the record. A 41.6% BEV share in France is not one brand's doing. It is a mass-market segment that now has cheap, subsidised, locally built options, with a premium crossover selling in volume above it.

Where this leaves the year

Measure August 2026 September 2026
BEV registrations 36,159 65,247
BEV share 38% 41.6%
Model Y 4,622 8,183

Adding September's month to the year-to-date total published for August puts France at roughly 387,000 battery-electric cars in 2026 so far. With three months left, the country is on course to end the year near a third of all registrations being battery-electric — a threshold that looked distant when the year opened with the market down and the subsidy regime being rewritten.

What a European owner should take from this

The useful read is not the record itself but its composition. A market where the best-selling car overall is electric, and where two of the top three electric cars cost well under half what it does, is a market that has stopped treating battery-electric as a category and started treating it as the default.

One caveat on the figures: September totals are provisional and France's registration bodies routinely revise them. The direction is not in doubt; the decimal places may move.
