Transport Canada's open data for the federal EV rebate, updated on 13 October, counts 2,386 claims for the Tesla Model Y in September 2026. That is more than three times August's 757, and the highest monthly figure for any Tesla since the Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP) took its first claims at the end of March. Only the Chevrolet Bolt, on 2,584, had more. By make, Tesla was second for the month behind Chevrolet's 3,791 and ahead of Toyota's 2,292.
Four months of claims
| Month, 2026 | Tesla Model Y | Chevrolet Bolt | All EVs |
|---|---|---|---|
| June | 564 | 1,122 | 9,845 |
| July | 193 | 1,130 | 9,228 |
| August | 757 | 1,923 | 11,015 |
| September | 2,386 | 2,584 | 14,243 |
The Model Y took 16.8% of all September claims and 19.3% of the 12,332 claims for battery-electric cars.
First in three provinces, eighth in Quebec
| Province, September 2026 | Model Y claims | All claims | Model Y share | Model Y rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| British Columbia | 1,031 | 2,731 | 37.8% | 1 |
| Ontario | 866 | 3,291 | 26.3% | 1 |
| Alberta | 150 | 472 | 31.8% | 1 |
| Quebec | 281 | 7,047 | 4.0% | 8 |
Outside Quebec the Model Y took 2,105 of 7,196 claims, or 29.3%, more than twice the Bolt's 919. Quebec is still the exception, but a smaller one. Its 281 Model Y claims are up from 63 in August, when the Model Y ranked 16th there, and the Bolt still led the province with 1,665. The channel gap the August data exposed has not closed: 48.8% of Quebec's September claims were leases, against 3.7% of Tesla's claims nationwide. Quebec filed 52.5% of all claims in the third quarter.
A quarter-end wave
The month was back-loaded. Tesla's claims numbered 466 from 1 to 15 September and 1,920 from 16 to 30 September, so four in five arrived in the second half. June had the same shape on a smaller scale, 201 then 363, and July fell back to 193. That is the rhythm of Tesla's end-of-quarter delivery push, which makes a single month a poor guide.
Over the third quarter the Model Y logged 3,336 claims, second to the Bolt's 5,637 and just ahead of the Chevrolet Equinox EV on 3,311. That is 9.7% of the quarter's 34,486 claims, up from 945 in the second quarter. The market as a whole went the other way. Claims fell 14.3% from the second quarter's 40,239, a total that included 20,426 in April, the first full month of the programme. The third quarter's rebates were worth 151.7 million Canadian dollars, Drive Tesla Canada notes.
What the file shows, and what it does not
Every Tesla claim in the data is for a 2026 Model Y. EVAP caps the final transaction value at 50,000 Canadian dollars and excludes cars built outside Canada and its free-trade partners. Drive Tesla Canada's rebate guide lists the Berlin-built Model Y RWD as the only Tesla that qualifies; the Shanghai-built Model 3 does not. The count therefore understates total Model Y sales. The file counts incentive requests by date, not approvals, and earlier months are revised between releases: August's Model Y figure now reads 757, against 754 in the August edition.
Why it matters in Europe
The link to Europe is direct. Drive Tesla Canada reported in July that Canadian Model Y orders are supplied from Giga Berlin. The outlet says the switch let Tesla sidestep tariffs on US-built cars. Tesla publishes no Canadian sales figures, so this rebate file is the closest thing to a monthly public count of one of Grünheide's export markets.
