Audi revived the A2 nameplate on 7 September as an electric compact built around a single number: 12.8 kWh/100 km on the WLTP cycle. Prices start at 38,200 euros in Germany, deliveries begin in December 2026, and the car is built at Ingolstadt on the Volkswagen Group's updated MEB+ platform.

The original A2, launched in 2000, was an aluminium spaceframe hatchback that sold poorly and is now remembered as ahead of its time. Audi is reusing the name to make a point about consumption rather than power, and it has put the engineering behind it: a drag coefficient of 0.24 on a car roughly the footprint of a VW ID.3.

The architecture is 400-volt, not 800. That is why the DC peak stops at 183 kW and the 10-80% window sits in the mid-twenties of minutes rather than under twenty. Efficiency was the priority; charging speed was not.

The efficiency claim, checked

Audi calls this the most efficient car it has built, and against its own back catalogue that is easy to believe. Against the wider market it is good rather than a record.

TeslAnt reported in August that the base rear-wheel-drive Model 3 moved to 572 km WLTP on new low-rolling-resistance tyres, with consumption of about 12.1 kWh/100 km — see the Model 3's tyre-driven range gain. On the same test cycle, Audi's new efficiency flagship uses slightly more energy per kilometre than the cheapest Model 3 already on sale in Europe.

Range runs the other way: 646 km from the 79 kWh pack beats the Model 3 RWD's 572 km. That gap comes from capacity, not aerodynamics. Efficiency and range are separate claims, and the A2's headline range is bought with a bigger battery.

Why it matters

The interesting part is not that Audi built an efficient car. It is that a volume German premium brand has decided efficiency is the product — the thing on the poster — in a segment where the industry has spent five years selling power and screen size.

For a Tesla buyer in Europe, the A2 e-tron is not a direct substitute. There is no Tesla hatchback, and the shapes do not overlap. What it does is put a credible German alternative under 40,000 euros into the part of the market Tesla has relied on for volume, with a competitive consumption figure and a longer maximum range.

Two things to watch before December: whether the 12.8 kWh/100 km figure holds on the wheels most buyers actually order, and whether the 400-volt charging becomes the compromise owners notice on long trips.
