CATL, the world's largest supplier of EV batteries, has told investors it intends to begin small-scale production of its first solid-state cells in 2027. That puts it on the same timeline as BYD, which is targeting pilot production in the same year, and turns what has been a research contest between China's two battery giants into a race with a date attached.
The two positions were staked out days apart. CATL published its reply to investors on 29 July; BYD was granted six new solid-state patents on 31 July, covering halide-sulphide interlayers and composite cathodes, as TeslAnt reported in BYD's six new solid-state patents. Neither company is ahead in any way that can be measured from the outside.
What "pilot production" actually means
It is worth being precise about the claim, because solid-state announcements have a long history of being read as more than they are. A pilot line is not a factory. It exists to prove that a cell design can be built repeatably outside a laboratory, at volumes measured in thousands rather than millions, and to find the manufacturing problems that only appear at scale.
CATL's own numbers make the distance clear. In June the company placed its solid-state technology at level four on the nine-level Technology Readiness Level scale — laboratory validation and prototype development. Chief scientist Wu Kai has said CATL is aiming for TRL 7 or 8 by 2027. That is a large step in eighteen months, and it still stops short of a production-ready product.
The 2030 caveat comes from CATL itself
The most useful guidance on timing has come from CATL chief executive Robin Zeng, who said in June that technical and manufacturing challenges leave solid-state batteries several years from mass-market adoption, and that the technology is initially likely to appear only in premium vehicle platforms. CATL has been blunt that the commercialisation supply chain is still some distance away.
So the honest reading of a 2027 pilot line is a 2030 car, and an expensive one at first. Anyone shopping for an EV in Europe this year or next is not choosing between a liquid-electrolyte pack and a solid-state one.
Why it still matters for European buyers
Two things follow from this for the European market, neither of them about 2027.
The first is supply. Both companies chasing the same milestone in the same year means the first credible solid-state capacity will sit in China, alongside the LFP and sodium-ion capacity already there. European cell projects are working to a different and generally later clock.
The second is residual values. A visible 2030 step-change in energy density is the kind of thing that shapes what buyers expect a used car to be worth at the end of the decade — more than it shapes what they buy now. It is a reason to watch the announcements, not a reason to wait.
Western startups remain in the same race: Factorial and QuantumScape are both pursuing solid-state chemistries, on timelines that have historically moved to the right.
