Tesla changed its North American configurator on 1 October 2026. Every Model 3 sold in the United States, Puerto Rico and Mexico now carries a 16-inch centre touchscreen, the dual-motor cars are quicker, and the Performance gains power and range.
None of the prices moved. Canada was not included, and neither was Europe.
What actually changed
| Trim | Change |
|---|---|
| Every Model 3 | Centre screen 15.4 to 16 inches, 2560 x 1440 in place of 1920 x 1200 |
| Premium AWD | 0-60 mph from 4.2 s to 3.8 s; range unchanged at 346 miles (557 km) |
| Performance | 510 hp to 528 hp; 309 to 316 miles (497 to 509 km); adds a black headliner; 0-60 mph unchanged at 2.9 s |
| Model Y Premium AWD | 0-60 mph from 4.6 s to 4.3 s |
Prices held at $36,990 for the RWD, $42,490 for the Premium RWD, $47,490 for the Premium AWD and $54,990 for the Performance. A mid-cycle specification bump with no sticker increase is the unusual part here, and it is the part Tesla did not put in a headline.
The Model Y's share is smaller than the joint billing suggests: it already received the 16-inch screen and black headliner in North America earlier this year, so what it gains now is three tenths of a second on the Premium AWD, a figure first posted by Sawyer Merritt.
This is Fremont catching up with Shanghai
Two days before this, Tesla gave the 2027 model year Model 3 built at Giga Shanghai the same 16-inch screen — and added vehicle-to-load power export on top. TeslAnt's coverage of the Shanghai-built 2027 Model 3 said at the time that the United States was the market left out. That is no longer true, but only on the screen.
V2L did not cross. Tesla opened power export in the United States in August and confined it to the Model Y Premium, the Model Y Performance and the Cybertruck. The US Model 3 still cannot run a socket, and nothing in this update changes that.
So the two factories have now diverged in a specific way: Shanghai's Model 3 got the screen and the power export, Fremont's got the screen and the horsepower.
Where this leaves a European buyer
Europe's Model 3 is not a Fremont car. It is built in Shanghai, which means the upgrade Europe is waiting for is the Shanghai one — the version with V2L in it, not the American version without.
That is the useful conclusion from an announcement that otherwise has nothing in it for Europe. Tesla has confirmed the 2027 specification for China, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea, and has named no European date. Shipping from Shanghai takes over a month, so the earliest European cars showing it would arrive late in October — an inference from the sailing time, not a Tesla statement.
Canada is the other market still waiting, and it is the sharper omission: Canadian cars come from Fremont, the plant that has just made the change.
What an owner should do
Nothing, unless you have an order in. If you are ordering a Model 3 in Europe now, ask about the build date: V2L is tied to 2027 model year hardware and cannot be retrofitted or switched on later.
If you already own one, none of this reaches you. A 16-inch screen is a different panel, not a release note.
Watch the European configurator rather than the American one. Tesla has shipped this specification to four markets outside China without announcing it for Europe, and Europe's cars come off the line that already builds it.
