More than half of the new cars registered in Sweden in October 2026 were fully electric. Mobility Sweden's figures, published on 2 November, count 12,594 battery-electric cars among 24,660 new passenger cars: a share of 51.1%, against 36.2% in October 2025. Allt om Elbil and Elbilen both call it a Swedish record and the first month in which electric cars took the majority.

The market

October 2026 October 2025 Change
New passenger cars 24,660 24,078 +2.4%
Battery-electric cars 12,594 8,707 +44.6%
Battery-electric share 51.1% 36.2%
Plug-in hybrids 5,376 7,111 −24.4%
Plug-in hybrid share 21.8% 29.5%

The market barely grew, so the electric gain came out of the other powertrains. Plug-in hybrids lost almost a quarter of their volume, and petrol, diesel and conventional hybrids fell too. October also had one registration day fewer than a year earlier: Mobility Sweden counted 1 to 30 October, so cars registered on Saturday 31 October will appear in November's figures.

From January to October, battery-electric cars took 43.8% of the market (103,450 of 236,446), up from 35.5% a year earlier.

Tesla: up 248%, but 11th

Tesla in Sweden Oct 2026 Oct 2025 Jan–Oct 2026 Jan–Oct 2025
Model Y 328 116 7,706 4,794
Model 3 135 13 970 1,012
Model S and Model X 0 4 24 37
Total 463 133 8,700 5,843

Tesla registered 463 cars in October, 248% more than a year earlier, the rise Reuters reported on Monday morning. The percentage is large because the base is small: Tesla registered only 133 cars in Sweden in October 2025. Year to date, Tesla is up 48.9% to 8,700 cars, a 3.7% share of the market.

The monthly ranking shows the other side. In September the Model Y was Sweden's most-registered electric car on 2,330. In October it was 11th among electric cars on 328, and Tesla was the 11th brand. Tesla's European deliveries usually bunch up in the last month of each quarter, so the first month is thin.

Volvo's EX40 led October's electric ranking on 997, ahead of the EX30 on 802, the Volkswagen ID.7 on 511, BMW's iX3 on 495 and Kia's EV3 on 472. VinFast was seventh with 398 VF 6s, which Elbilen links to the Green SM taxi service being set up in Stockholm. Volvo's new EX60, a direct Model Y rival, registered 282.

Year to date the EX40 leads on 9,894, 2,188 cars ahead of the Model Y. The gap was 1,519 after September. December, the last month of Tesla's quarter, is where the Model Y would have to close it.

Northern Europe

According to Reuters, Tesla's October registrations also rose 131% in Norway and 34% in Denmark, as relayed by Traders Union. In Norway, Tesla finished 55 cars ahead of Toyota on 1,548. In Denmark, no Tesla made October's top ten, as TeslAnt reported on 1 November.

What the industry wants next

Companies still account for six in ten new cars in Sweden and for the same share of new electric cars, but Mobility Sweden says private buyers are coming back. Its chief economist, Sofia Linder, said the shift away from plug-in hybrids "shows that more and more companies and households are ready to drive an electric car". Making the electric car "a possible choice for more households" is the next step, she said, and "that requires a broader electric car premium and better opportunities to charge where you live, not least in apartment buildings."
