Battery-electric cars have outsold petrol cars in the European Union over the first eight months of a year for the first time. ACEA's registration data, released on 24 September 2026, puts battery-electric volume at 1,641,333 cars against petrol's 1,634,733 — a gap of about 6,600 cars. Both round to a 21.7% share, which is why the headline figure reads as a tie; the volumes are what separate them.
The reversal is recent and steep. A year ago petrol held 28% of the EU market and battery-electric 15.8%. Diesel has fallen from 9.4% to 7.3%, so the two combustion fuels together now take 29% of new registrations, down from 37.5%.
| Powertrain, EU | Jan–Aug 2026 | Share | Share a year ago |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery-electric | 1,641,333 | 21.7% | 15.8% |
| Petrol | 1,634,733 | 21.7% | 28.0% |
| Hybrid-electric | 2,759,718 | 36.6% | — |
| Plug-in hybrid | 758,082 | 10.0% | 8.8% |
| Diesel | — | 7.3% | 9.4% |
Hybrids remain the single most popular choice by a wide margin. At the half-year mark battery-electric was still behind on the EU-only count; two more months closed the gap. The overall market grew 5.3% year-to-date and 4.5% in August alone, so this is a shift in mix, not a collapse in combustion demand alone.
August was stronger than the year-to-date figure suggests
The eight-month average hides how fast the curve is bending. In August, battery-electric registrations reached 196,486 cars — 27.7% of the EU market, up from 17.8% in August 2025, a 62.7% increase. Plug-in hybrids added another 78,426 cars at 11.1%. Taken together, plug-in models were close to two in five new cars registered in the EU that month.
Three of the four largest EU markets drove it: France up 74.2% on battery-electric registrations year-to-date, Germany up 53.1%, Denmark up 40.9%. Petrol fell hardest in exactly those places — France down 35.8%, Germany down 21.9%.
Tesla grew 66%, and still sold fewer cars than BYD
Tesla's European recovery is real and it is being outrun. Tesla registered 142,165 cars in the EU from January to August, up 65.9% year on year, lifting its share from 1.2% to 1.9%. In August alone it took 12,547 registrations, up 52.7%.
| Manufacturer, EU | August 2026 | Jan–Aug 2026 | Y-o-Y |
|---|---|---|---|
| BYD | 20,845 | 177,752 | +163.0% |
| Ford | 16,637 | 171,670 | −17.7% |
| SAIC Motor | 15,510 | 163,707 | +19.8% |
| Tesla | 12,547 | 142,165 | +65.9% |
| Chery | 14,048 | 116,318 | +250.9% |
| Leapmotor | 6,446 | 62,508 | +426.8% |
BYD outsold Tesla in the EU by two-thirds in August and leads it by more than 35,000 cars on the year. Ford and SAIC are also ahead of Tesla year-to-date. This is the manufacturer-level picture behind the record 11.7% European share Chinese brands took in August on Dataforce's wider count.
Tesla's EU-wide growth also sits oddly against its national results, where August was its most polarised month in years — strong in France and Germany, down 36% in Italy. Germany and France alone supplied roughly 61% of Tesla's August EU registrations, which is what carries the EU-wide number.
Read the figures with the caveat ACEA attaches
ACEA's manufacturer table covers the EU only; adding EFTA and the UK changes every share. The association also marks current-year data as provisional and subject to revision, so the 6,600-car gap between battery-electric and petrol is inside the margin that later revisions could move.
