One in four passenger cars on Danish roads is now electric. Mobility Denmark, the car importers' association, said on 30 October 2026 that the industry statistics service bilstatistik.dk counted 739,917 electric cars on 29 October, 25% of the passenger-car fleet. It is the first time the share has reached a quarter, and it came a month after cars running only on petrol fell below half of the fleet for the first time.
The most common of those electric cars is a Tesla. There are 53,463 Model Ys on Danish plates, 5,281 more than the Volkswagen ID.4 in second place.
The ten most common electric cars
| Rank | Model | Cars, 29 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tesla Model Y | 53,463 |
| 2 | Volkswagen ID.4 | 48,182 |
| 3 | Škoda Enyaq | 42,370 |
| 4 | Tesla Model 3 | 41,783 |
| 5 | Volkswagen ID.3 | 33,936 |
| 6 | Audi Q4 e-tron | 25,752 |
| 7 | Škoda Elroq | 19,061 |
| 8 | Mercedes-Benz EQA | 18,154 |
| 9 | Cupra Born | 13,498 |
| 10 | Hyundai Kona | 13,223 |
The list counts cars imported second-hand, a large flow in Denmark: 78,100 used electric cars came into the country in 2025, on top of 126,400 new ones, according to Statistics Denmark figures cited by Hvilkenbil.
The Model 3 has slipped a place
When Mobility Denmark last counted the fleet, in March 2026, the Model 3 was third, ahead of the Enyaq. It is now fourth, 587 cars behind the Škoda. The two Teslas add up to 95,246 cars, 12.9% of Denmark's electric fleet. Tesla said in September that more than 100,000 of its cars are registered in Denmark, a figure that also includes the Model S and Model X.
The ranking is less one-sided than its top line. Nine of the 20 most common models sit on the Volkswagen Group's MEB platform, from the ID.4 and Enyaq to the Cupra Born and ID.7, and together they account for 214,181 cars.
A fleet count also lags the sales chart. After nine months of 2026, the best-selling new car in Denmark was the Škoda Elroq, ahead of the Toyota bZ4X and the Model Y, Hvilkenbil reports. Tesla's place in the fleet was built over years: the Model 3 was already Denmark's best-selling electric car in the first quarter of 2019, the year it arrived.
From one in ten to one in four in two years
| Date | Electric share of passenger cars |
|---|---|
| September 2024 | 1 in 10 |
| March 2026 | 1 in 5 |
| October 2026 | 1 in 4 |
The pace comes from new-car sales. Electric cars took 7.1% of registrations in 2020, more than half in 2024 and 68.2% in 2025. In September 2026 they took 88.8%.
A tax rise the industry wants dropped
Mobility Denmark used the milestone to argue again against the registration-tax rise planned for 1 January 2027. The price below which an electric car pays no registration tax is set to fall from about DKK 419,000 to about DKK 366,000, and the share of the full tax that electric cars pay rises from 40% to 48%. The motorists' association FDM calculates that a Model Y Long Range with all-wheel drive would cost almost DKK 28,000 more, if importers pass the whole rise on.
"It makes no sense to turn up the registration tax a few months before all of car taxation is to be reviewed," said Mads Rørvig, Mobility Denmark's chief executive. A government expert group is due to make its first recommendations on car taxes before the end of 2026. Mobility Denmark represents car importers, which have a direct interest in lower new-car prices.
