BCA has opened what it describes as a first-of-its-kind battery repair centre in Doncaster, aimed at used electric cars whose packs are out of warranty. The proposition is simple and overdue: repair the part that has failed instead of replacing the entire battery.

What the centre does

The facility is run by BCA Fleet Solutions and works on components from any manufacturer, to OEM standards, using reclaimed parts where possible. Its scope goes beyond cells:

Module repair and replacement
Battery casing repairs
Cell balancing
Motor replacement
DC charger and inverter repairs

The target case is a used EV where the manufacturer warranty has expired or been invalidated — the situation in which a battery fault has, until now, often meant a quote for a whole new pack.

"Rather than simply replacing expensive batteries, we investigate the cause and repair or replace components, delivering a cost-effective and timely solution," said Paul Bromley, managing director of BCA Fleet Solutions.

Why whole-pack replacement is the problem

A full battery replacement on an out-of-warranty EV frequently costs more than the car is worth. When that is the only option, a car with one bad module becomes an economic write-off, and the possibility of that outcome gets priced into every used EV in the market — including the ones that will never need it.

That is the mechanism behind a lot of used-EV depreciation. Buyers discount uncertainty, and a risk with a five-figure worst case and no middle option is expensive uncertainty. Module-level repair creates the middle option, which is what changes the arithmetic.

The evidence BCA is working from

BCA says that since it introduced battery health checks in 2024 it has seen EVs sell for 1.4% above guide price and 2.7 days faster than before. Those are the company's own figures for its own remarketing operation, so read them as directional rather than independent. But the direction is consistent with what the rest of the market shows: information about a battery's condition raises what buyers will pay for it.

The confidence side has been improving in Britain already — TeslAnt reported on used-car dealers' EV confidence reaching a four-year high. Repair capacity is the harder half of that story, because confidence without a repair route is still confidence in a car nobody can fix.

What is not yet answered

BCA has not published repair costs, turnaround times, throughput capacity, or whether repaired packs carry any warranty. Those four numbers determine whether this is a genuine alternative to replacement or a service that works only on a narrow band of faults. A dealer deciding whether to take a high-mileage EV into stock needs to know what a module repair costs and how long the car sits waiting for it.

Why it matters across Europe

Britain is not unusual here. Every European market with a maturing EV fleet is arriving at the same point: the first generation of mass-market electric cars is now old enough to be out of warranty, in the hands of second and third owners, and served by independent garages that were never given the tools or the data to work on a traction battery.

The regulatory side of this is moving too. From February 2027 the EU battery passport obliges manufacturers to open battery management system data to independent operators, which is exactly what a repairer needs to diagnose a pack rather than condemn it. Repair capacity and data access have to arrive together, and this is the capacity half showing up first.
