Tesla's six-seat, long-wheelbase Model Y L has been spotted testing on German roads for the first time, the clearest sign yet that Europe is next in line after the crossover's US debut earlier this month.
What was spotted
European outlet Carwow filmed a camouflaged Model Y L running on a German test track, wrapped in the familiar black-and-white disguise and wearing German registration plates. The prototype rode on 20-inch Überhelix wheels with their aerodynamic covers removed — a detail suggesting engineers are still validating ride and range configurations rather than finalising a production trim.
The Model Y L is a stretched version of the standard Model Y, adding roughly 18 cm (7 inches) of length for a total close to 5 metres. That extra wheelbase makes room for a genuine three-row, 2-2-2 six-seat layout — the feature European families have asked for since the standard Model Y's third row proved too cramped for regular use.
Why the sighting matters
Tesla launched the Model Y L in the United States on 2 July, priced from $61,990 with an EPA-rated 325 miles of range and North American deliveries scheduled to begin in September from Gigafactory Texas. A German-plated test car appearing barely a week later strongly implies Tesla is preparing the homologated European specification in parallel.
Crucially, the Model Y L already secured EU type approval in 2025, so the regulatory groundwork is done. Tesla has not published a European price, a WLTP range figure, or an on-sale date, which is why this remains an expected launch rather than a confirmed one.
Where it fits in Tesla's European line-up
Tesla already sells a seven-seat version of the standard Model Y in Europe, introduced in February 2026 for an extra €2,500. That car squeezes two small seats into the existing body; the Model Y L instead lengthens the vehicle for adult-usable seating, positioning it as the family-hauler option above the regular Model Y and below the Model X. What European buyers should watch for
Several questions remain open before the Model Y L reaches European driveways:
| Detail | US (confirmed) | Europe (unconfirmed) |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $61,990 | Not announced |
| Range | 325 mi (EPA) | WLTP TBC |
| Seating | 6 (2-2-2) | Expected 6 |
| Deliveries | September 2026 | Not announced |
Because Gigafactory Berlin already builds the Model Y for European markets, local production of the L variant would avoid import tariffs and shorten delivery times — but Tesla has not confirmed whether Grünheide will build it. Until Tesla opens European configurators, treat launch timing and pricing as unconfirmed.
Bottom line
A German-plated test mule is not a launch date, but it is the strongest signal so far that the Model Y L is heading to Europe. Families weighing a three-row EV should watch for an official European reveal in the coming months rather than acting on the US pricing.
