Tesla rolled out software version 2026.2 on 22 January 2026, bringing a mix of safety features, practical winter fixes, and a notable branding change.
Child Left Alone Detection
The headline feature targets a serious safety scenario. If the system detects an unattended child in the cabin, the vehicle flashes exterior indicator lights, plays an alert tone, and sends a push notification to the owner's Tesla app.
The feature uses cabin camera data processed entirely on-device — no images are transmitted to Tesla's servers. It is enabled by default on the new Model Y and can be toggled via Controls > Safety > Child Left Alone Detection.
Frozen Charge Cable Release
Version 2026.2.3, which followed shortly after, addresses a persistent frustration for EV owners in cold climates. When a charge cable is frozen in the port, owners can now release it by pulling and holding the rear left door handle for three seconds.
The mechanism requires either an unlocked vehicle or a recognised key nearby. Traditional release methods — the touchscreen and mobile app — remain available as alternatives. The door-handle approach provides a physical backup when electronic systems are unresponsive, and crucially, it works without removing gloves.
Tesla had previously added preconditioning and defrost features to combat frozen charge ports, but those do not always prevent cables from freezing solid during extended charging sessions in sub-zero conditions.
Autopilot Becomes Self-Driving
In an undocumented change, Tesla replaced the "Autopilot" label with "Self-Driving" throughout the vehicle interface. The Controls menu tab now reads "Self-Driving" instead of "Autopilot," with options for TACC, Autosteer, or Full Self-Driving listed under "Self-Driving Features."
The rebrand aligns Tesla's in-car terminology with its marketing and likely reflects the company's push to position the technology ahead of European regulatory discussions.
3D Supercharger Maps Expand to Europe
Vehicles with AMD-based infotainment systems now display 3D Supercharger site maps at European locations, starting with Belgium (Brugge and Heusden-Zolder). The maps show real-time stall occupancy and vehicle positions, helping drivers identify available chargers before pulling in.
Service Mode Improvements
For technicians, the ECU Update Status panel now includes non-CAN electronic control units such as Autopilot processors and Telematics Control Units. This applies to Model S (2021+), Model 3, Model X (2021+), Model Y, and Cybertruck.
