Ireland Extends EV Grant Scheme Through 2025 with €5,000 Tesla Model 3 Incentive
In January 2025, the Irish government announced the continuation of its Electric Vehicle (EV) purchase grant scheme through the end of 2025, providing crucial support for Tesla Model 3 buyers and other electric vehicle purchasers across the Republic of Ireland.
What Happened
The Department of Transport confirmed in mid-January that the EV grant scheme, originally scheduled for review, would remain in place with unchanged funding levels. Private buyers continued to receive up to €5,000 toward new battery electric vehicles priced under €60,000, with the Tesla Model 3 remaining fully eligible for the maximum grant amount.
The decision came after industry lobbying and concerns over stagnating EV adoption rates in late 2024. Transport Minister Eamon Ryan cited the need to maintain momentum toward Ireland's 2030 target of having one million EVs on Irish roads.
Commercial vehicle buyers also benefited from the extension, with grants of up to €3,800 remaining available for electric vans and trucks under specific weight categories.
European Context
Ireland's decision aligned with broader European Union pressure to accelerate EV adoption ahead of the 2035 combustion engine ban. While countries like Germany ended their EV subsidies in late 2023, Ireland joined France and several other EU member states in maintaining purchase incentives through 2025.
The Irish approach contrasted sharply with the UK, where the plug-in car grant ended in 2022. This created a competitive advantage for Irish Tesla buyers, who effectively paid €5,000 less than their Northern Ireland counterparts for identical Model 3 configurations.
The extension also supported EU-wide Tesla production from Gigafactory Berlin, as Irish Model 3 deliveries continued flowing from the German facility throughout 2025.
Impact for Tesla Owners
For prospective Irish Tesla buyers, the grant extension meant significant savings remained available. A Tesla Model 3 RWD, priced at approximately €42,970 before incentives, effectively cost €37,970 after applying the maximum €5,000 grant.
The scheme particularly benefited company car buyers, who could stack the purchase grant with Ireland's favorable Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) rates for electric vehicles. Tesla Model 3 company cars qualified for just 0% BIK in 2025, compared to up to 37% for equivalent petrol vehicles.
Tesla owners also continued benefiting from reduced motor tax rates, paying just €120 annually regardless of Model 3 variant, compared to €630-€2,350 for comparable internal combustion engine vehicles.
Looking Ahead
The grant extension provided certainty for Irish Tesla buyers through 2025, though questions remained about long-term funding beyond the current commitment. Industry analysts suggested the scheme's future would depend on EV adoption rates and budget constraints in subsequent years.
For current Tesla owners in neighboring European markets, Ireland's decision highlighted the patchwork nature of EU EV incentives and the potential benefits of cross-border purchasing for eligible buyers.
